A deep look at learning to teach

As a teacher, I would argue that learning to teach is one of the most challenging and life-changing endeavors one can undertake. As Larkin demonstrates in this book, teachers don't just acquire a set of skills, they fundamentally change who they are. The case studies in this book make this transformation visible and show it for what it is - a highly personal journey of self examination. In an age where talk about teachers is often reduced to `value added' calculations, teacher `accountability', and state summative ratings, this book is a breath of fresh air. The educators in this book are looked upon as human beings - with all of their unique perspectives, beliefs, opinions, ideas, past experiences, and hopes as the raw interconnected material out of which learning is produced.

Along the way, Larkin is on the look out for patterns and moments of significant conceptual change, which he points out so that teacher educators might use this work to help shape teacher education programs. Considering that teachers' ideas will shape their practice, learning more about how concepts change in the minds of teachers is an important step toward creating more equitable and meaningful science education. Larkin's work will certainly point educators in the right direction.

Amazing Book

This is an excellent book. I have previously purchased another book by Hamza Yusuf called Diseases of the Heart. This book follows a similar theme but this is a masterpiece by Ghazali. Anyone who wants to understand the true meaning of islam and its teachings--this is the book.

Beautiful Al Ghazali

Al Ghazali, a great Iman-turned-Sufi, is almost the perfect blend of rational and straightforward teachings and mystical transmissions. This book is a great treatise on the heart/soul and the nafs that either serve as destroyers of the path or helpers on the path (depending upon one's relationship to them). I have found it to be surprisingly approachable and understandable, with enough mysticism and layers to appeal to the advanced seeker. I highly recommend it.

Unless you are lucky enough to enroll at a course in zaytuna.... why not just read through this man's Genius... one of many books that make up the set, it is a must for every muslim home... so great is the philosophy of imam al ghazali, the west bothered to translate it to learn from it. Read also the book of afterlife....

THE Go-To Astrology Book for House Rulerships

Alan Oken's "Rulers of the Horoscope" needs to be in every astrologer's library. It's just fantastic. Mr. Oken, an accomplished astrologer in his own right, gives a very detailed emphasis on dispositorships, mutual receptions, and the rulers of each astrological house posited in other houses here in this epic work. If there was a Top Ten List of Astrology Books, "Rulers of the Horoscope" would certainly make the cut. The best paragraph in the whole book is on page 38, where the author emphasizes the importance of synthesis when interpreting the natal chart. He is just so spot-on about this vital intuitive concept, and it's amazing how he can get that point across in just one paragraph. Whether you're a beginner or serious practitioner of astrology, do yourself a favor and get this book!

PreS-Gr 1—These two series titles use familiar fairy tales for their basic structures. Blow Your Nose, based on the "Three Little Pigs," reminds children how to avoid spreading germs. The story follows the classic tale, except that all the wolf wants from the pigs is a tissue to blow his nose. Denied entrance when he knocks, he sneezes and accidentally blows down the straw and stick houses. The brick house does not fall down, the pigs put a huge pot of water on the fire, and the wolf comes down the chimney too soon for the water to be boiling. Instead, he enjoys a nice warm bath, after which the protagonists straighten out the misunderstanding, the rejuvenated wolf gets a tissue, and the pigs catch his cold! Goldilocks pushes the theme of healthy eating. The little girl wants cookies and ice cream for breakfast and won't eat her cereal. She runs away and finds the empty bears' home, where she wreaks the usual havoc before napping in Baby Bear's bed. When the Bear family comes home, although Goldilocks thinks they are going to eat her for lunch, they instead make her clean up the mess she's made (including fixing Baby Bear's chair) and then invite her to share a very healthy and delicious lunch and dinner with them before accompanying her safely home. Both books have pleasing formats, large print texts, and colorful illustrations. At the end of each tale, there are simple discussion questions and an activity suggested for "next steps." It's really cute, but it really does not reach about spreading germs. I wanted a more fictional yet informative book. Basically just follows the regular Little Pigs story, but says the wolf is blowing their house down because he is sneezing. Still very cute, but not helpful with teaching about germs.

Perhaps only in contemporary America can this be touted as an advantage for a Buddhist teacher. McLeod, no doubt, is not the least bit bothered by the implications, as he is writing expressly for "Americans in a thoroughly American way." Still, potential readers should not fear that McLeod has shortchanged them on the details of the Buddhist path. He offers very charming stories, unclouded prose, step-by-step meditations, charts and quotes from such varied sources as Bob Dylan, Milarepa, Rumi, Yogi Berra and anonymous Buddhist sayings ("Think of all sentient beings as Buddha, but keep your hand on your wallet"). McLeod delivers a hefty how-to manual that could prove useful to a single soul in the hinterlands or a sophisticated searcher in Los Angeles, where McLeod directs Unfettered Mind, a Buddhist teaching and counseling service. This text's apparent self-help style is somewhat ironic, since McLeod pointedly asks, "Can you do this work on your own?" and immediately responds, "Basically, the answer is no.... We need a teacher," going against the American apotheosis of the individual. Whether he cops to it or not, McLeod has illuminated the path for solitary individuals who want a long-lasting handbook to begin the journey toward wakefulness. What the Buddha taught . . .

This is definitely a book that will remain close at hand as I struggle through my meditation practice (such as it is, or isn't at times!). This guidebook helps to set up a meaningful meditation practice that will achieve results and give direction to the hard work of analysis and finding inner truth.
The author writes clearly and makes difficult mental images come alive. Stephen Batchelor claims that "Ken McLeod's eminently practical manual goes straight to the heart of what the Buddha taught." Becoming fully alive, living joyfully and with compassion are goals that the reader can clearly see being set out and achieved.
But this is hard work. I have read through the book once, but must read each step in the practice to keep on track. I think that this will be a life time endeavor and will, as pointed out in many places, eventually require a teacher.

A Great Contribution

I am indebted to Ken McLeod. The beauty of this book is its tremendous practicality. Here is a clear means of getting started on the Buddhist path of attention without becoming bogged down in doctrinal issues. It is written beautifully and with an incisiveness that wakens one's attention all on its own. A great contribution.
