About the Author
Alan G. Gross is a professor of rhetoric at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. He is the author of "The Rhetoric of Science "and "Starring the Text: The Place of Rhetoric in Science Studies. "He is co-editor of "Rhetorical Hermeneutics: Invention and Interpretation in the Age of Science "and "The Scientific Literature: A Guided Tour."
Arthur E. Walzer is a professor in writing studies at the University of Minnesota. He is the author of "George Campbell: Rhetoric in the Age of Enlightenment" and co-editor of "The Viability of the Rhetorical Tradition,"

Good synopsis of a major 20th Century rhetorical theory

Chaim Perelman was a European philosopher who made major contributions to rhetorical theory and the theory of justice. This book provides an informative synopsis and thoughtful interpretation of his rhetorical theory. Although the authors focus primarily on Chaim Perelman's treatise The New Rhetoric, they also discuss the relationship between Chaim Perelman's rhetorical theory and his writings about non-rhetorical, philosophical matters.
The first chapter sets forth a summary of Chaim Perelman's life and his intellectual influence. The second chapter discusses the philosophic foundations of Chaim Perelman's rhetorical theory. The remaining eight chapters explore his rhetorical theory by: (1) identifying and describing various elements of his rhetorical theory; (2) showing how those different elements are related and interact; (3) discussing various criticisms of his rhetorical theory; (4) exploring how his rhetorical theory has implications for various disciplines, including philosophy, politics, and science; and (5) noting some of the limitations of his rhetorical theory. In addition to using examples from the writings of Chaim Perelman and discussing the views of other scholars, the authors illustrate their observations, contentions, and arguments about rhetoric with examples from a wide range of sources, including: the Bible; Plato's writings; a play by Shakespeare; Rene Descartes' philosophical writings; the speeches and writings of Abraham Lincoln; General Douglas McArthur's arguments for the Inchon landing; remarks by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and passages from various scientific articles and treatises.
This is not a book for casual reading, nor an introductory-level book on rhetoric. The observations, contentions, and arguments of the authors will be better understood and more readily followed if the reader has some knowledge of, or experience with, philosophy, classical and modern rhetoric, and argumentation theory.
