Set in 1964, Barefoot in the Park follows the lives of newlyweds Paul and Connie Bratter as they adjust to married life in a tiny Greenwich Village apartment. In typical Simon style, all manner of comic chaos ensues as the Bratters’ marriage begins to collapse under the pressure of a five-flight walk-up, a skylight that leaks snow, an eccentric neighbor who must climb through their apartment to get to his, and Connie’s misguided attempt to marry off her mother. Acclaimed playwright, Neil Simon, is a Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning author. “Neil Simon’s comedy Barefoot in the Park is 30-something now, but its newlywed protagonists, the Bratters, remain forever young.” — The Dallas Morning News

About the Author
Born in the Bronx on July 4, 1927, Marvin Neil Simon grew up in Manhattan and for a short time attended NYU and the University of Denver. His most significant writing job came in the early 1950s when he joined the staff of YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS, a landmark live television comedy series. Sid Caesar’s hilariously cutting-edge program had some of the best comic minds in television working for it, including Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Larry Gelbart, and Carl Reiner. "I knew," said Simon, "when I walked INTO YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS, that this was the most talented group of writers that up until that time had ever been assembled together." By the 1960s, Simon had begun to concentrate on writing plays for Broadway. His first hit came in 1961 with "Come Blow Your Horn," and was soon after followed by the very successful comic romance "Barefoot in the Park."
From AudioFile
Neil Simon's first runaway hit (the 1963 Broadway production ran nearly four years) follows a young couple through the complicated transition from being in love to being married and in love. Its winning quality comes in part from the way the characters sound young (not always the same as being young). Laura Linney and Eric Stoltz bring out the sounds and rhythms of youth in Simon's dialogue. Linney's Corrie is sincere, pleading, honest, and loving but also prone to pouting overstatement. Stoltz's Paul, a young lawyer, pretends to a greater maturity than he has, and Stoltz reveals the transparent dignity of this nervous beginner. An energetic, pleasing performance. A classic
By Doug Hanson
I am a huge fan of Simon first off. I was assigned a scene from Barefoot In the Park in my acting class this semester so I decided to buy it instead of just renting it or using a library copy. I had never read this particular play before and within the first 2 pages I fell in love with it.
