Review
"The very idea that Nolan can take stories that we have and/or heard since childhood and make them relevant for today grants him a unique place in gay literature...It takes a brave writer to even attempt something like this and it takes a good writer to make it work. Nolan is both...[A] story you will not soon forget." —Reviews by Amos Lassen

Nick Nolan: Why did I write Wide Asleep? In addition to having left my two favorite characters from Strings Attached dangling at the end of Double Bound, I wanted to celebrate eternal love...especially the unlikely, star-crossed love that simmered between my characters Jeremy and Arthur.

But before I delve into that, here's some background on the new storyline: Wide Asleep is loosely based on Sleeping Beauty, which dates back to Perrault's 1697 work La Belle au Bois Dormant, about a king and a queen and their irresistible daughter La Belle, who becomes cursed to prick her hand on a spinning wheel's spindle and subsequently falls into a deathlike sleep--along with her hapless family, courtiers, and friends--for one hundred years before being awakened by the kiss from an equally irresistible prince.

Although I've taken what many will consider to be unforgiveable liberties with La Belle au Bois Dormant, the core elements remain. However, my irresistible protagonist is gay hottie Jeremy Tyler, who learns that both he and kingly, ber-daddy Arthur have been pricked by the 'spindle of death' many times, only to be reawakened--reincarnated, actually--in subsequent lifetimes along with their family, friends, and enemies (saucy Carlo, frigid Aunt Katharine, scheming Lazzaro, seductive Carmella, and tail-wagging Bingham), not unlike La Belle, her royal parents, and their entourage. And yes, there is kissing. Lots of kissing.

Sure, I use "past lives" as a plot device in Wide Asleep to keep the reader turning pages. But after I began researching the basic tenets of reincarnation--innate talents; predestined relationships; immortality of the soul, and so on--I started thinking of the well-worn fairy tale Sleeping Beauty as a covert, ahead-of-its-time, New Age past-life metaphor that had somehow escaped even the unerring eye of Shirley MacLaine.

During the hypnotic regressions in Wide Asleep, Jeremy discovers that Arthur and he lived together in one lifetime as a stoic Confederate captain and a cocky, orphaned soldier during the American Civil War, and even before that as members of the fierce (and exclusively homosexual) Greek warrior tribe known today as The Sacred Band of Thebes.

But the era looming largest in the dramas presently dogging the couple is back when Arthur lived as the Roman Emperor Hadrian, and Jeremy was his devoted lover, Antinous. Beautiful, doomed Antinous. They were truly a happy couple -- until Antinous mysteriously drowned...which brings me back to Wide Asleep: The various plots churn convincingly (or so I've been told) probably because of the very real mystery surrounding Antinous's death: Was it murder? Suicide? Ritual sacrifice, or just an unfortunate accident? Little is known, because in spite of Hadrian having been a writer and a poet he recorded very little regarding his catastrophic loss except, "Today Antinous fell into the Nile." Nothing more from him or anyone else...as if an Imperial gag order had been issued. And if not for reports that Hadrian "mourned like a woman for his beloved," one might suspect that the emperor had something to do with Antinous's demise, perhaps due to the growing scandal surrounding their relationship.

But Wide Asleep proposes a more probable motive behind the young man's drowning...

I hope you enjoy the story.

Entertaining continuation to a wonderful series.
By Neil in Morgan Hill
A 5-star rating for Nick Nolan's Wide Asleep. Sometimes we find ourselves in complex situations and drawn to people as if by some irresistible force. If you like love stories with a paranormal twist. Then you will enjoy Wide Asleep. Nick likes to combines various threads to make a storyline that is both entertaining and speculative. Although there might even be a Greek god making an appearance. Could Happen... or at least someone worshipped as a god. It just might make you scratch your head and wonder.

I recommend Wide Awake to readers who enjoy a love story that has depth and character. Those looking for erotica will not find it here. The book is appropriate for those 17 years of age and older. This is not a short story. Nick definitely works hard for his readers and delivers writing that expresses his integrity as a writer. I suggest those reading this review take the time to read those written previous to mine as they have provided more detail related to the storyline.

Personally, I like this book as much as the three previous books that I have read in this series. Characters are always important to me and Nick does a great job of creating great characters that I enjoy watching play off of each other.

I highly recommend all three books in this entertaining and heartwarming series.

If You Have Not Read Nick Nolan -- This Book Would Be A Great One To Start WIth!
By Xander
Upon seeing Nick had written another book with two of my all-time favorite characters in it, Jeremy Tyler and Arthur Blauefee I was eager to read this book. They both have been two of my favorite characters since the first time I read them. It did not take me time to get into “Wide Asleep” and come to the realization that I’d been waiting and looking forward to, it was like seeing a good friend you had not seen in a while and cannot believe you were not missing them more.

This story starts with years have passed and they have not been with each other and frankly were not well because of it. Within the first few chapters, I was crying and had my hopes up for things to work out. Little did I know that I would be tearing up several times while reading. It is easy to not only relate to both Jeremy and Arthur, but to feel what each of them is going through.

Nick writes real characters who are people who act like people, meaning not everyone sees or reacts to things in the same way. He is true to who the characters are as people, for better or worse he keeps them true to who they are. As always he has painted, a backdrop in which they story is set that no matter how things are going I find myself wishing I could be there in person with them.

Something about this book that enjoyed, although I do not recall with Nick’s previous books was the different storylines with characters unfolding. As they did, I knew that at some point these different characters were going to cross paths, which kept me reading not sure about how they were going to and what the outcome was going to be.

Sounds like a novel...
By Stephanie N. Gomez
Continuing the story of Jeremy and Arthur through Strings Attached and Double Bound, the latest book in the saga of the Tales From Ballena Beach, Wide Asleep is much more than it appears on the surface. At first telling the story of a lost love found again, suddenly takes a paranormal turn.

Jeremy is plagued with disturbing dreams that tie him to past lives. Under hypnosis, Jeremy discovers he has lived many lives before, always with a familiar cast of characters who strongly resemble people in his current life. Will an evil ex-lover continue to haunt Jeremy and how will this affect his relationship with Arthur?

Written with great care and very well researched by Nick Nolan, Wide Asleep opens up a world of questions about reincarnation and life, if there is any, after death. Sad, sometimes funny, always classy, this is, simply stated, a great book.
