Ashley grew up on Cape Cod, MA and now lives in a seaside town half-way between Boston and the Cape. Her first paid writing work was in college when she wrote the obituaries and birth announcements for a local paper. That led to more creative writing--radio commercials and in recent years, some food blogging and writing for a Cape Cod newspaper. She loves all things food related and has always been an avid reader, across many genres, romance, mystery, suspense, paranormal and of course, historical.

Interesting characters & storyline but poor editing was more than I could take

The main characters were fun to meet. Liam is good-natured, teasing, and honest. He asks his sister-in-law Emma to invite her friend Julia to come to Montana as a possible mail-order bride for him. Julia agrees, and proves herself to be a worthy partner for him, even when unexpected challenges come their way.

This is the second book in the series. I love the Donovan family and felt Liam and Julia were better developed characters than Ethan and Emma in the first book. The series isn't riveting, but the characters are engaging and family-oriented, which I liked. However, I really struggled with the poor editing of the book. These are things that a simple proofreading should have caught and were distracting to me. A few examples:

First, before the first book began, Liam's sister-in-law Susan died in childbirth. This isn't a spoiler to anyone as it is mentioned as soon as Ethan's character is introduced. The family refers to her as Susan throughout the entire first book, but in Liam and Julia's book she is called Allison. Why?

Second, Julia and Emma grew up in an orphanage in Boston and remained close after leaving the orphanage at age 18 and finding work in the city. Emma worked as a kitchen assistant and Julia as an accounting clerk. Emma was better prepared to be a Montana bride because she could cook. When Julia arrives in Montana, the first thing Emma does is teach Julia to cook, starting with bread. Yet several chapters later she notices they are nearly out of bread and makes a mental note to ask Emma to teach her how to bake bread.

Third, one of the challenges Liam and Julia face comes from someone in the community. When a situation arises that is scary and threatening, Julia shares the experience with Emma and they talk about their shared shock and fear. Two days later, Julia talks with Emma about it again as if Emma is hearing it for the first time.

Each time I took a minute to go back and see if I had remembered the story wrong, and each time I was correct. It felt like I was reading the first rough draft of the story rather than a polished version. It was distracting and detracted from the overall story. I have no plans to read any of the other stories in the series now.

Sweet romance

Enjoyed reading about Liam and Julia. I like knowing what happens to characters that were mentioned in a previous book. this is a sweet short story the one thing I found interesting was the discussion of depression. Would doctors know about depression? Question for the author. enjoy reading this romance.

very sweet love story with a bit of mystery

There was nothing new or complex in the story by Ashley Merrick. Just short and sweet a romance that read like a mail order bride novel although Julia was one of the orphans from the Boston Catholic orphanage That was turned out at age 18to make room for other younger children. She was talented in mathematics and when she lost her job felt it was time to join her friend Emily,in Montana,in the hope of becoming her sister in law. Liam was an interesting man with his outgoing personality and dealing with depression at the same time. The cure for Liam was interesting too Then there were the attempts on Liam's life. 4 stars

About the Author
Jeff Abugov graduated from Concordia University Film School in Montreal where his two student films won national awards at the Canadian Student Film Festival. He began his professional career writing freelance for the NBC hit Cheers for which he eventually became a staff writer and then story editor. He served as executive story editor on The Golden Girls, then went on to write and produce such hit shows as Roseanne and Two and a Half Men. He served as executive producer of Roc and Grace Under Fire, and most recently of the animated series Fugget About It. He also wrote and directed the feature film The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human, starring David Hyde Pierce and Carmen Electra. He has received a Golden Globe Award, a Peabody Award, and three People’s Choice Awards, as well as being nominated for a Humanitas Prize, a Canadian Screen Award, and a second Golden Globe. After having achieved success writing and producing within the Hollywood system, doing as he’s told and playing nice, Jeff has at long last decided to let his imagination run rampant and do it his own way . . . and he’s having a blast! Exactly as promised.

A fun, funny and satirical book that still manages to grab you with it's action. It reads like a movie you'd really like to see. While the author is clearly having fun (and trying to sell books) with this title, he delivers everything that the cover promises plus more surprises. A perfect beach or ski lodge book - it won't change the world, but it's a hell of a lot of fun.

Fun, entertaining and surprisingly complex

A highly enjoyable and surprisingly well-researched novel. Do not let the title fool you, it's much more complex than that! No, it's not the second-coming of "The Sound and Fury" but it delivers exactly what it promises; a fun, entertaining, engaging and exciting story that keeps you wanting more.

The burning question I'm left with is, "When will I get to see this on the big screen?" It has the makings of the next biggest Hollywood Franchise.

An outstanding investigation of the realities behind microfinance

It is impertinent to question the effectiveness of charitable efforts, and this makes it difficult for anyone to raise doubts about the practice of microcredit, which involves lending small sums of money to the poor at high interest rates. But if the purpose of the charitable efforts is to help the poor, rather than to gratify the donors, then someone really does need to investigate whether the practice actually works. That person is David Roodman in this book.

The quick - and for most donors very disappointing - answer is that there is no convincing evidence that microcredit is an effective tool for bringing people out of poverty. There are many stories of people who have indeed worked their way out of poverty after accessing microcredit loans, but there are also many stories of people who have worked their way further into debt. According to the author, the most reliable research into the effectiveness of microcredit does not indicate any net positive effect on the incidence of poverty. Microfinance as a whole, however, particularly microsavings accounts, does provide a very useful means for the poor to manage their money.

Intuitively these findings make sense. In Western countries, poor people who save money tend to improve their lot, whereas poor people who max out their credit cards tend to stay poor. Poor people tend to borrow money more often to meet today's needs than to invest in high-return business enterprises. Finding food for today is a more pressing concern than repaying a loan tomorrow.

The surprising thing about the findings is that they tend to contradict the virtually unanimous voice of microcredit proponents over many years. Presumably the microcredit myth has lasted so long because it appeals to our paternalistic instincts as donors, romantically portraying the poorest of the poor as skilled entrepreneurs just needing access to capital (when what they really need is opportunities for decent employment), portraying women as better managers of money than men (when in reality they are perhaps more susceptible to coercive demands for repayment), and suggesting that poverty can be solved through a simple commercial transaction (when much more complex structural change is required).

The author does not confine himself to investigating the effect of microfinance on financial poverty. He also considers the impact on freedom and industry building. He presents his observations in a measured and impartial but very engaging and readable manner. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is concerned about serving the poor effectively.

One of the most comprehensive books on issues of microfinance

David Roodman writes extremely well and that makes it an engaging read to start with. He is a very well trained academician who has taken more tie and effort than any other I know to understand what microfinance actually does (with the possible exception of Esther Duflo). He interacted with many users of microfinance and, supposedly more intensively, the providers - managers, investors, development agencies, etc. - and genuinely reflects their experiences and the kind of knowledge they have gathered. He blends and contrasts and syntesis it with the principles and insights of academic methods, particularly in the area of impact-assessment. The result is an outstandingly rich book that offers learning ground for academicians and practitioners equally. A truly due diligence, written to be read!

The story is fine. It is the artwork that is simply extraordinary. This is an excellent example of why graphic novels exist. The good ones combine the visual storytelling of illustration with the written word while allowing the reader to expand upon what's presented with his or her own imagination.

Continues the impressive storytelling of volume one

Predor Skal'Nas of the Rakata continues his search for Tython, the force-strong world on which Je'daii train. (The attempt made by Xesh, his force hound, to claim Tython for Skal'Nas is chronicled in volume one.) Xesh has been exiled to Bogan, Tython's dark moon, where a Je'daii named Daegen Lok was also exiled after an experience that, according the Masters, drove him mad. Lok's belief is that he had a vision of Tython being invaded by dark side warriors wielding force sabers. Lok wants to get his hands on a force sabre of his own and, luckily for him, Xesh knows how to build one, a task that lead them to a planet of crystals and to a world of industry.

Sek'Nos Rath, Shae Koda, and Hawk Ryo return from volume one. Having chased down Xesh once, they're enlisted to do so again. Hawk has an interesting bond with Lok, having shared the same vision (while claiming it was a hallucination rather than a vision in order to remain in good standing with the Je'daii). Meanwhile, a force hound named Trill wants to settle an old score with Xesh while the Je'daii back on Tython learn the history of the Rakata.

So there's a lot going on here. As was true in the first volume, the story is an intriguing addition to Star Wars lore. Particularly interesting is the origin of the Jedi's reliance on force sabers as their weapon of choice and their initial reluctance to embrace it. The plot is rich without becoming convoluted. Action scenes are well balanced with an informative history of the early Jedi.

I continue to be impressed by the high quality of the art and storytelling in this series. While the story whizzes along, the characters and their conflicts are developed in unusual depth. As always, the struggle to balance good against the dark side is at the story's heart, and that theme gains a new dimension as Tython gears up for an invasion by the Rakata.

A MUST for any star wars fan! I just hope Disney doesn't cancel the series.... The world created by Ostrander in Dawn of the Jedi is simply amazing.... From the first lightsaber of the Jed'aii to the origins of the Order.... A truly fantastic read.

Hit and miss but worth the time

I am not a poetry officianado, but I have been trying to read more of it lately.

Overall I enjoyed this book. There were some poems I didn't really get/like. Several poems that reminded me of Ed Sherman. A few poems that I wished were longer. A lot of poems that I thought were good but will never dwell on. And a handful that I really loved and want to hang in my memory for a while.

There wasn't much originality here, in my opinion. I didn't have to trudge through this to finish it, but I still felt like nearly everything in this book has already been said a million times, and better, by somebody else.

This new edition of Paul Ferris's perceptive biography, which was originally published in 1977, is primarily notable for its frank portrait of the poet's marriage to Caitlin Macnamara Thomas, who died in 1994. "The essential truth about the Dylan-Caitlin relationship," Ferris writes, "was that his dependent nature left him vulnerable in later years when his wife withdrew her affection and became blatantly promiscuous." Yet the author is not unsympathetic to Caitlin, whose biography he wrote in 1993. The accounts of Thomas's raucous, drunken visits to America, where he died in 1953 at age 39, will certainly incline readers to forgive anything his wife did in revenge. The book's principal strengths remain what they were in 1977: a knowledgeable, in-depth account of the poet's childhood in Wales (Ferris himself was born a mile from Thomas's childhood home); a lucid disentangling of myth from fact in both interviews and contemporary sources; and a sensitive understanding that "behind the public cavortings was a private agony." This is Ferris's real subject, the agony of a boy who was "pretty ... spoiled ... the darling of the family," and who never managed to grow up enough to create a life that would support his poetic gifts. Scholarly, but still extremely readable. Excellent!

Don't be daunted by its 500-page length. TTT is extremely wellresearched and scholarly, but also eminently readable. The first twochapters, on Tradition and the effect of extreme higher critics,should be manditory reading for all Catholics, even those not interested in eschatology. The remainder of the book is an excellent antidote to end-times hysteria; it restricts itself to approved prophecies only, and beautifully explains what Catholic teaching really is on the subject. My only complaint is that there are quite a few editing glitches; that's easily overlooked, however, in light of the overall high quality of this work.

A monumental achievement!

This scholarly book may not appeal to those who want to see sensationalism, but for the reader who wants to read the definitive book on Catholic end-times belief, this is it. Desmond Birch backs up his every conclusion with sound theology. Clearly he has spent a lifetime studying not only scripture, but many obsure Church documents from the early Church. He makes one of the best arguments I've seen for the teaching authority of the Church, which he presented simply as background to understanding the role of Mary in the early Church and today. He is neither gullible nor superstitious, and is unabashedly aligned with Rome--only Church approved apparitions are covered. One of the asides in the book was tremendously meaningful to me personally: Birch pointed out how just about every heresy in history was directly related to a lack of devotion to Mary on the part of the founder of the heresy. After laying all the bricks for a better understanding of apparitions, he discusses in great depth the content and implications of the messages. Everything is summarized very neatly at the end of the book, in case your head is spinning by that time! I couldn't recommend TT&T more enthusiastically. It is a phenomenal study of end times.

Excellent book. I wish I could have an updated version.

This book is excellent and I agree strongly with all the previous positive comments on it. I read this book right after the year 2000. As someone else has posted, I wish the author could update the book (published in 1996) because there is, in my opinion, a bit too much discussion on "year 2000 end-times issues" that now are of less interest (because it is obvious that the catastrophists were wrong). The book could also be enhanced with more analysis of approved prophecies that received few treatment (dreams of Dom Bosco, La Sallete and Fatima, por example). All in all, this is probably the best place to go, if you want to understand the truth on eschatology.
