there is a little library in this book

Other than being a fantastic introduction on some critical themes in intercultural communication, this book contains excerpts from many different sources to provide different perspectives on similar ideas. The result is a comprehensive book that is great for both educators and students alike. I highly recommend it.

Terrible organization and truncated content

This is one of the worst text books I've had to use so far in my graduate studies. The way in which the authors organized the book makes little sense. They give you a bit of information on the topic and then an activity that really doesn't help you understand the material. As far as the material goes the authors included some interesting resources but decided to just use small extracts from different articles to make their point. This made class discussion very superficial since we only had a superficial understanding of the topic at hand. I usually keep my books after a class is over however, this book will not be one of them. I'm definitely selling this back even if I don't get much back for it.

At first glance, this book appears kind of dry, but it was actually very interesting, and did a great job of addressing different issues and viewpoints in intercultural communication. The anecdotes and examples balanced out the theory, making it easy to draw correlations to real world events.

About the Author

J Scott is a full-time real estate investor and rehabber currently living in the suburbs of Washington, DC (formerly living and investing in Atlanta, GA). He is originally from the East Coast, and until Spring of 2008, he resided in Silicon Valley (California), where he spent many years in management at several Fortune 500 companies.

In 2008, J and his wife decided to leave the 80-hour work weeks and the constant business travel behind. They quit their corporate jobs, moved back East, started a family and decided to try something new. That something new ended up being real estate, and five years later, they've built a successful business buying, rehabbing and reselling single family homes.

Since 2008, J and his wife have rehabbed over 150 of their own houses for millions of dollars in profits, and have mentored and assisted other investors in rehabbing hundreds more properties. These days, the team has branched out, now flipping houses in different parts of the country and focusing on larger new-construction projects.

J has detailed his real estate adventure on his blog, 123Flip.com, where he discusses all his team's triumphs, failures and results -- including all the nitty-gritty financial details of the business.

Detailed yet understandable-Very good for new to medium-range flippers

This is the second book I've bought written by the author (the other being his book on house flipping). It's excellent for what you might call a "serious beginner" because it's detailed, yet it's understandable and not overwhelming.

The book is in a very good format that includes narrative as well as corresponding tables for the multiple components of a house (e.g., plumbing, sheetrock, roofing) to help estimate prices, and the author always gives a good overview of what these components are for, which is a big plus for someone with not a lot of construction experience. For instance, when discussing roofs, he breaks down that there are three parts of a roof (sheathing, underlayment, shingles), and then explains the purpose of each of these parts; After the basics of "how a roof works," he explains the options for these components (i.e., for shingles can do asphalt, wood, metal, tile, etc.,) and what the corresponding price range would be for each type.

Being that all houses are different in levels of repair, labor and material costs vary by part of the country and quality of materials used, etc., it's impossible to have exact costs for each type of repair until you actually start the rehab. However, so long as you do your homework, this book gives an excellent basis for how to estimate rehab costs accurately enough so that you know what you're getting into and won't be blindsided by huge surprises.

good for home owners or flippers

I have not read the complete book but that is not necessary. Everything is indexed very well and a reader can easily go from one subject on costs to another. The subject (like heating) is well explained and the scope of work explained. Then the different aspects of the subject are considered and the cost of each given as an estimate. All one has to do is to add up the highs and lows for a gas furnace, ductwork and size of house to get a high and low estimate. I did that in a whole five to ten minutes.

Well written and very informative!

My wife and I are getting into flipping houses and we wanted to read all we could. This book was great. It was written in a way that was easy to understand and helped understand the cost of work and materials. J. Scott is great and I've got all his books. They are informative and easy to understand. I've learned a lot and would make sure to read this before getting into house flipping!

Not easy being a ghost.

Indeed it isn't easy being a ghost, especially when the house you are trying to hunt becomes inhabited by Americans. A light and humorous story, and after reading it's guaranteed to stop you worrying about things that go bump in the night.

Excellent narration and a wonderful listening experience

Thanks to our local library, my daughter and I have enjoyed several playaways which are basically all-in-one audiobooks. All one needs is a triple A battery and one is set to go. At our local library, patrons are expected to supply their own batteries and headphones (the latter because of hygiene concerns). They are really small and inconspicuous so that it makes it convenient to slip into a purse, bring it along to the gym or while exercising outdoors, and also on car trips. Although it is an all-in-one audiobook, the playaway can also be heard via a CD player with the use of an adapter.

The operation of the playaway is simple - one just plugs in earphones, speakers, or a car adapter into the provided jack; press the POWER button, press the play button, and listen! There is a keypad which allows the listener to do one of the following: equalizer, Power button, speed button (choice of 5 speeds), turning volume up, turning volume down, LCD screen which indicates the status and how much battery power is left, reverse button for chapters, play/pause button, and forward chapter button.

The Canterville Ghost has always been one of my favorite stories and Rupert Degas' comic-infused narration makes this an engaging listening experience.

Description for this book needs to be rewritten.

The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde is a highly entertaining book. 5 stars for this wonderful book, I've read and re-read it many times. Whoever wrote the description for this illustrated edition for Amazon is completely mistaken. I downloaded a free sample to see if maybe there were two versions of this book but the sample that downloaded is the original book. The mistaken description states: "In the 1600s, cowardly Sir Simon of Canterville flees a duel and seeks solace in the family castle. His ashamed father seals him in the room where he is hiding and dooms him to life as a ghost until one of his descendants performs a brave deed. Simon believes he may be saved when he meets Cuffy Williams, an American kinsman stationed with a troop of soldiers at the castle in 1943. Will this blood relative save the family honor, or will his blood be as yellow as the rest of the Cantervilles?" Perhaps that's describing a different novel? No matter though, the true book is much more entertaining and the illustrations for this edition are quite nice.
