Deep thoughts, descriptions but not enough prescription

The Design of Business by Roger Martin is a thought-provoking book that seeks to probe the reasons behind the current state of business and the new ways of thinking needed to change that state for the better. The book in my opinion is miss-titled as it is more about thinking than design. This does not make it a bad book, but one that will disappoint readers looking for design techniques based on the title.

Martin's thesis centers around a few key concepts including:

The knowledge funnel where ideas and innovations move from exploring mysteries of business and customers, to defining heuristics and finally developing algorithms. While the funnel looks like a traditional innovation process, Martin applies it to aspects of organizational design, behavior and innovation to good effect.

Martin points to the difference between managing businesses for reliability and seeking validity. Reliability concentrates on managing predictable performance, financials, reducing process variance and establishing control. Validity concentrates on learning what is right based more on heuristics and qualitative than quantitative methods. Martin's conjecture is that we need both, but probably need more validity to generate the creativity and innovation needed to survive in a dynamic market.

Design thinking, here Martin borrows Tim Brown of IDEO's definition and makes the connection between design thinking and abductive reasoning which centers around observing data that does not fit with existing models or patterns. Abductive reasoning is in sharp contrast to deductive and inductive thinking that dominant business management.

The case studies on P&G, RIM, Cirque du Soldier are predictable and read more like narrative stories of executive actions rather than an analysis of what these companies did to redesign and innovate in their company. Frankly I have read other authors case studies of these companies and found them more valuable.

The combination of all of this gives me the impression that the book is a set of ideas in search of an application. Now that may sound harsh, but I kept looking for support on how I can apply these ideas by learning from others.

Martin does include a discussion about a personal knowledge system that consists of the way you view the world, the tools you use to organize your thinking and understanding and finally the experience that you need to build your sensitivity skills. The Personal Knowledge system is an example of what I am talking about, good ideas, presented in a clear fashion but without a particular set of next steps or examples of how mere mortals have transformed themselves.

Using Martin's terminology I get his ideas and see them as valid, but I was looking for a little reliability based tools and approaches to turn valid ideas into action and results.

The book presents its ideas in a fairly academic context, discussed more as ideas than recipes or a framework for designing a business. That is a disappointment as the book was recommended to me as a design book.

I recommend the book for people who want to explore the way of thinking and deep systems behind design thinking. I cannot recommend the book for people who are looking to learn about how to apply design thinking. If you are looking for a good design thinking book go to the source Tim Brown's new book Change by Design which has a greater focus on understanding design thinking at an actionable level.

Solving Wicked Problems

It's unfair that some individuals can write so well about topics that can be a bit esoteric. Roger Martin, who is dean of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, has produced yet another good book about thinking differently. His first book, The Opposable Mind, captured how good business leaders can see past the traditional "either-or" alternatives to create "both-and" options.

In The Design of Business, Martin offers a view that suggests that design should be the centerpiece or the starting point for much of the work we do in business, and why design is so important. He's not the first to suggest the importance of design, and a number of firms, such as IDEO, have been in the vanguard of the design-led forces. What Martin does well is to describe why design led thinking is important, and give examples of how to do it well.

Martin argues that all knowledge moves through three stages - a mystery, a heuristic and an algorithm. Mysteries are about discovery of new opportunities or research into solving intractable problems. Heuristics are rules of thumb that narrow the size and scope of mysteries and make them more manageable. Algorithms reduce the heuristics into repeatable processes.

This leads to two schools of thought in most businesses: exploration and exploitation, according to Martin. Most businesses are structured to exploit the algorithms, refining the way they do business and becoming highly effective and efficient, while neglecting the exploration of mysteries. Martin calls this the reliability-validity tradeoff. The vast majority of businesses want "reliability" - clearly defined processes that are easily repeatable and produce the same results. What he argues they need is more "validity" - creating the right and best outcomes through more exploration and less reliance on reliability. Three powerful forces emphasize reliability over validity: the demand for proof of the correctness of a new idea, an aversion to bias and time/resource constraints. These factors reinforce the bias toward reliability and repeatability over exploration and validity.

Once Martin has described his ideas, he then proceeds to use a few good examples to demonstrate the transition from a reliability driven organization to a validity and design driven organization. One chapter is devoted to the transition Lafley and Kotchka made at P&G, well documented in other places. Another chapter is devoted to Herman-Miller and the development of the Aeron chair. One of my favorite quotes from that chapter came from the Chairman of Herman Miller. He quizzed the design team about who they interviewed and received feedback from about the Aeron chair. When told they had not asked the sales force for feedback, the chairman said "That is right. You never ask the sales force what they think of a design. Their job is to sell it." Note that the designers spent hundreds of hours with actual customers, watching them work at their desks and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of existing seating options.

The book offers up a few more examples, ones that unfortunately have been used by others to demonstrate innovation and design, including Apple, RIM, Target and Cirque de Soleil. The weakness of many books about innovation and design is that they either have too few examples and must return to the same well, or that design thinking simply isn't widespread, so the same examples are used over and over. What's not clear is whether or not these firms are bellwethers or just happy accidents.

On the whole, this is a well-conceived and well-written book. In what could be a very esoteric topic, Martin keeps the concepts moving and introduces a lot of examples. He puts his finger on many of the challenges that those of us in the innovation and design space constantly face: too much short term thinking, too much demand for proof of an idea based on historical norms, too little time and too few resources for innovation and design.

This is a great book, and an easy read. It belongs on the desk of any executive or manager who is tasked with introducing more design thinking into an organization.

How to "gain fluency in both the allusive poetry of intuitive discovery and the precise prose of analytical rigor"

In one of his previously published books, The Opposable Mind: Winning Through Integrative Thinking, Roger Martin explains that all great leaders possess "the predisposition and the capacity to hold two [or more] diametrically opposed ideas" in their head and then "without panicking or simply settling for one alternative or the other," were able to "produce a synthesis that is superior to either opposing idea." Integrative thinking is a "discipline of consideration and synthesis [that] is the hallmark of exceptional businesses [as well as of democratic governments] and those who lead them." Great leaders develop a capacity to consider what Thomas C. Chamberlain characterizes as "multiple working hypotheses" when required to make especially complicated decisions. They do not merely tolerate contradictory points of view, they encourage them.

In his latest book, Martin explains why "design thinking is the next competitive advantage." In fact, it may well be the most valuable application of integrative thinking, in part because, that successful business innovation is the result of collaboration and proceeds through a "path" or (as Martin describes it) a "knowledge funnel." The model for value creation that he offers in this book requires a balance - "or more accurately a reconciliation - between two prevailing points of view on business today." One is analytical thinking that "harnesses two familiar forms of logic - deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning - to declare truths and certainties about the world." The other is intuitive thinking - "the art of knowing without reasoning. This is the world of originality and invention...Neither analysis nor intuition is enough," however. Martin presents a compelling argument in support of reconciling the two modes of thought, asserting that the most successful businesses in the years to come will balance analytical mastery and intuitive originality "in a dynamic interplay [he calls] design thinking."

How so? "Design thinking is the form of thought that enables movement along the knowledge funnel, and the firms that master it will gain an inexhaustible, long-term business advantage. The advantage, which emerges from the design-thinking firms' unwavering focus on the creative design of systems, will eventually extend to the wider world. From these firms will emerge the breakthroughs that move the world forward [because] design-thinking firms stand apart in their willingness to engage in the task of continuously redesigning their business." And, I presume to add, because their leaders have mastered integrative thinking, without which creative and productive collaboration cannot be achieved, much less sustained.

So, what is "the design of business"? It is the process by which business leaders apply design thinking within the current knowledge stage and hone and refine what is known so that they can "generate the leap from stage, continuously in a process I call the design of business." Citing the pioneer insights of Charles Sanders Pierce, Martin duly acknowledges that it is not possible to prove any new thought, concept, or indeed in advance. In fact, "proof" must be redefined. "the answer, Pierce said, would come through making a `logical leap of the mind' or an `inference to the best explanation' to imagine a heuristic for understanding the mystery."

Although all this may sound highly theoretical and hypothetical, in fact the bulk of the material that Martin provided in this book addresses two separate but related questions: How to master design thinking? And How can it help to create a decisive competitive advantage? He focuses on a number of exemplary companies those initiatives help to provide an answer to each of these two questions, especially to the second. They include Cirque du Soleil, Research in Motion (RIM), Procter & Gamble, Steelcase, IDEO, Apple Inc., Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, Herman Miller, and Target. Led by an enlightened and determined, when necessary tenacious CEO and management team, each of these companies embraced design thinking and overcame three major forces of resistance whose objectives were to "enshrine reliability and marginalize validity": the demand that an idea be proved before it is implemented, an aversion to bias, and the constraints of time. There can also be cultural barriers, the result of what James O'Toole characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." One of the less-recognized benefits of integrative thinking is that it is more inclined to respect, perhaps even welcome dissent. At least some of those who oppose change will be less inclined to do so if they and their concerns are treated with what they perceive to be appropriate respect.

Readers will appreciate Martin's focus on what works, what doesn't, and why. His own mastery of integrative thinking is reflected by the scope and diversity of different perspectives on how to achieve and then sustain successful business innovation. He reminds his reader that the key tools of design thinkers are observation that is "deep, careful, and open-minded," imagination that consists of "an inference and testing loop," and configuration that enables translation of an idea into "an activity system that will produce the desired outcome." In the previous chapters, he had discussed dozens of real-world examples of effective applications of these tools. the critically important challenge of enlisting the active support of those who are "reliably-driven analytical thinkers who dominate the hierarchy and the validity-driven intuitive thinkers who are often brought in to `get the organization out of the box,'" Martin suggests and then discusses five specific initiatives (Pages 168-177). With all due respect to the power of integrative thinking, Martin correctly stresses the importance of what is generally referred to as "emotional intelligence." That is, being willing and able to appreciate legitimate differences between and among groups as well as individuals; to empathize; to seek to communicate on others' terms, not one's own, using tools with which they are familiar; and to stretch out of one's comfort zone to those of others.

In this brilliant book, Roger Martin has shared all he has learned about what design thinking is and can do; also, he has suggested specific initiatives that can help to enable his reader to become an effective design thinker while maintaining an appropriate balance by gaining "fluency in both the allusive poetry of intuitive discovery and the precise prose of analytical rigor"; and finally, while creating value for a business, his reader is urged to discover how design thinking can create meaning for one's life. Bravo!

While every reader will have their own list what better dinner conversation game? this dozen (chosen in conjunction with Friedwald's editor, Bob Gottlieb) should contain at least half of everyone's choices. But this is not a trivia book, and the joy of these short essays ruminative, but also filled with fascinating historical and social details - is in their intelligence and their always evident love of the music itself. Friedwald (Sinatra!; The Good Life, with Tony Bennett) can surprise, as when he lists similarities between Kurt Weill and No‰l Coward (in his discussion of "Mack the Knife") or unearths the connections between Show Boat (which features "Old Man River") and British humorist P.G. Wodehouse. But he is at his best elucidating how a particular song works its magic. His history of Johnny Green's 1930 classic "Body and Soul" introduced by Gertrude Lawrence, made famous by the notorious Libby Holman and become a jazz standard when performed by Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker and Oscar Peterson is incisive, with illuminating details (he describes Tony Bennett's hand motions while singing). Friedwald performs similar feats with the other songs, including "As Time Goes By" (in which he praises Tiny Tim's late 1960s rendition), "The Saint Louis Blues," "I Got Rhythm" and "My Funny Valentine." In the end, the book is an important contribution not only to American musicology but also to the literature on popular culture.

More Fine Work From Friedwald

If you're an aficionado of the Great American Songbook, this is a must-buy. If you've read Friedwald's "The Song is You," you should already have this fine follow-up.
"Stardust Melodies" covers the origins and musical structure of some well-chosen standards. On the latter score, don't be intimidated if you don't read music; the analyses cover only a few pages and, frankly, it would be educational to read them while listening to the songs themselves.
Major recordings of the songs are then analyzed in the knowledgeable but witty and accessible style that endears Friedwald to his readers, and no one who has read any of his previous books will be disappointed. Perfect? No: the lack of discographies is a particularly glaring lapse, as noted by several reviewers. And, as others have also noted, Friedwald does have a blind spot when it comes to many more contemporary artists, but at least he wears his prejudices on his sleeve - he bluntly states, for instance, that he refuses to even listen to Johnnie Ray's recording of "As Time Goes By" (which happens to be excellent and, for Ray, quite restrained - WF might even like it!). This doesn't help his overall credibility with some readers, but for others Will's dislikes are part of the fun in reading him.
And that's the bottom line: this is a fun and informative book, not dry, stuffy or academic, reflecting the depth, variety and vitality of American pop. As the man said, Who could ask for anything more?

Insightful, but not for all readers

Stardust Melodies may be a godsend for musicologists, composers and musicians, but if you are a casual fan of jazz or swing this book may be overload. While Friedwald's other works, such as his biography of Sinatra's musical career, are accessible to a wide audience, the author's considerable expertise results in Stardust Melodies being very analytical and for many readers it may amount to a lot of trivia. That said -- I devoured the book and think it is superb in both concept and nearly as good in execution. Sure, everyone has a different list of songs, but I can't argue with Friedwald's selections.
What's missing? By all means, include a CD sampler of some of the older, obscure versions of the songs. While it would obviously be out of the question to reproduce the Sinatra and Fitzgerald tracks (for example), I'm sure that half of a surviving aircheck from Bing Crosby in the 1930s would be no problem and I would bet that almost none of the readers have heard it. Reading about music is sometimes difficult.
However, the historical information (for example, about the evolving lyrics of Ol' Man River, or the obscure origins of Mack the Knife) is treasurable and compensates for the frustration noted above. Opinion is inevitable in a work such as this, but Friedwald's is an educated opinion, and it adds flavor to the text.
Recommended, but not for casual listeners. You really must own at least a basic library of jazz standards before Stardust Melodies will be much of a revelation.

Hits and Misses

Will Friedwald probably deserves a medal for taking on this project, a 400-page analysis and performance history of twelve oft-recorded American lullabyes. Even some of us who swear by the Great American Songbook might opt for "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" if the alternative is listening to several hundred different versions of "Stardust" (as lovely as it is). Granted, a song biography has more going for it than, say, a performance history of Shakespeare's most popular plays, but still it's not exactly a compelling page turner.
Friedwald writes with hipness, esprit and engaging good humor, and he delivers provocative opinions, fascinating information, and a wealth of trivia. But the price of admission may be judged a bit excessive by some readers, mainly because the book contains no index, lists, or even discographies that would insure its value as a reference tool.
Every reader will no doubt find much to quibble about with a book such as this (admittedly no small part of its appeal). Frankly, I'm surprised the author makes no mention of the 1947 Lionel Hampton All-Star Concert recording of "Stardust" (with extraordinary solos by Charlie Shavers and Slam Stewart along with Hamp's introduction of the "Pretty Baby" motif, which Friedwald attributes to a later recording). And although a Paul Desmond version is mentioned, the Brubeck Quartet performance on the indispensable "Jazz at Oberlin" album (which evokes without stating the melody) is not. Finally, I'm surprised the author appears to accept "C" (as does Zinsser in his book) as the current standard key for the song. Any real musician I've known has balked at lowering the tune down half a step from the traditional Db, and for good reason: such a simplification drastically alters the character and feel of the piece, making stardust little more than prosaic morning dust.
No doubt no reader will be completely satisfied with the song selections--including this one. How can you possibly leave out as durable, beautiful, ingenious a tune as "All the Things You Are," especially given its many permutations? Which is simply to say that some of us would have preferred shorter chapters, more songs, and an index.

I had never been a great fan of Mehmood. On the contrary, I always associated with him (in fact held him responsible for introducing and promoting) vulgarity in Hindi cinema. His comedy was not clean in spite of having the late Johnny Walker as his Guru, benefactor and mentor whose humor was clean, and who simply with typical gestures and voice inflictions could send the audiences into splits. He was truly funny and simply delightful.He himself had refused to continue acting when vulgarity became an essential part of Indian cinema humor. Kishore Kumar, another friend of Mehmood, was quite a good comedian, although I rather hear him sing than see his slapstick comedies, But KK was not vulgar. He was just a bufoon. Mehmood too started out OK, but began to be more vulgar than humorous as the time went on. His dialogues with double meaning were not totally innocent (for lack of better word) and his body movements were borderline obscene. The only exception was his home production "Padosan." His relationship with Nargis and Sunil Dutt, whom he considered his sister and brother-in-law, respectively, is sweet. In fact (the book does not say so), it was Nargis, who had discouraged Sunil Dutt from taking on the lead in "Padosan," lest him playing the simpleton, Bhola, would spoil his image as a serious actor. Needless to say that for Dutt, with Kishore Kumar and Mehmood, "Padosan" turned out to be not only one of the greatest comedies ever, but also the highlight of his career. I liked Mehmood the best in this movie. Until then nobody had ever thought of Dutt acting out comedy of this sort, with the exception of "Ek Phool Char Kante" but even there the comedians really were Johnny Walker, Rashid Khan and Dhumal.

Early on Mehmood was quite desperate for work. His desperation also made him act as lover of his younger sister, Meenu Mumtaz, on the screen. But for that one can only feel compassion for a struggling actor with a large family to support, rather than judging him adversely for making poor choices. He just did not have the luxury of turning down ANY offers.

Before reading this book, all I knew about Mehmood was that he was the son of dancer Mumtaz Ali; brother of Meenu Mumtaz; brother-in-law of Meena Kumari; and his nephew being married to the late Geeta and Guru Dutt's daughter, Neena. As "disinterested" I was in Mehmood, I was very curious about his association with Guru Dutt. My curiosity centered around the unlikely marriage of Dutt's daughter, Neena, to Mehmood's nephew, Naushad Memon, the son of his sister, Shano, and the late Ismail Memon. However, I did not learn anything. I also knew from a book on Guru Dutt that Mehmood NEVER drank; he was surrounded by many who had ruined themselves by drowning their joys or sorrows in alcohol. Once you read about the life (rise and fall) of his father, Mumtaz Ali, the reader knows why Mehmood stayed away from alcohol. He, however, did not consider indulging in other addictions -- charas and ganja-- as beinng bad. I knew very little about his father except that he was a singer/dancer, and had seen some clips of the senior Ali on youtube. The reader cannot help but feel sorry for Mumtaz Ali who destroyed his career, life and family because of his addiction. It was sad to learn of the desperate times that the family faced.

Only recently on one of the Asian Cable TV channels in the US, I saw Mehmood's interview. The elderly gentleman I was looking at was nowhere close to the Mehmood, the comic and the buffoon, of the Hindi silver screen. This senior chap I saw on TV came across very polished, poised, and articulate. He seemed God-fearing. This one spoke crisp Urdu and flawless English, rather than the "Bambaiya" Hindi of many of his screen characters. I liked what I saw. My aim in reading this book was more to learn about Mehmood's contemporaries, his interactions with them, rather than reading about Mehmood, the man himself. I was not interested in the gossip but then I also knew that it was a part of the package. Admittedly, Mehmood's nagging habit of improvising the dialogues and surprising everyone was an issue of contention with the most of his star colleagues and sometimes even the directors. The book mentions several instances. His eagerness for one-upmanship was also offensive to many. After working in "CID" with Guru Dutt, he was offered a role in "Pyaasa." While playing as the youngest brother of Vijay (a character played by Dutt), whose other brother and mother spoke Hindi (giving them a North Indian rather than Bengali background), Mehmood spoke his few dialogues in Bengali-mixed Hindi. The scene filmed in Dutt's absence, bothered the director to the hilt. Consequently, after "Pyaasa" Mehmood NEVER acted in any Guru Dutt films again. However, Mehmood's sister, Meenu Mumtaz remained almost a permanent fixture in the Dutt films until "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam." In fact, surprisingly, "Pyaasa" is not even mentioned in this book.

The book is a candid account of Mehmood's life and to some extent a certain period in India cinema that he touched. The author has remained objective about the comedian's temper tantrums; many addictions and vices (charas and ganja, and of course shameless womanizing); numerous affairs; his kleptomania (for the sheer thrill of it often warning the person from whom he was going to steal--a "skill" that even transferred to his wife, Madhu, who in later years suffered from mental illness and almost in a Houdini-like manner disappeared even from captivity and went through heroic measures to steal); his vindictive nature (getting even with, for instance, with Kamal Amarohi by humiliating him by asking him to come over at his house after Amarohi's wife Meena Kumari left him and moved in with Mehmood and Madhu, her sister); his callous attitude towards Madhu, a woman who gave up everything to marry him, lived under sub-standard conditions, supported him through the worst of times, only to be humiliated at the hands of his hostile and superstitious family, with absolutely no support from him and finally to be betrayed by him when he pursued his American girl friend, Tracy, whom he later married. His selfishness comes through and through, with many instances of deception. He also, perhaps as a justification of his indiscretions, helped others who were carrying on their own affairs. Somehow as disgusting as it is, it also seems to make him more human. This is in sharp contrast to various charities that Mehmood generously syupported.

One of the most touching parts of the book is Mehmood's own confessions in Chapter 19. For the first time, the reader sees Mehmood as a feeble human-being, who, by his self-admission, was a liar, a cheat, conniving, manipulative and vindictive. And, was now remorseful. He asked for others' forgiveness and in turn forgave those who had wronged him. He made peace with his one-time fianc�e, Rashida (she died a few days after their meeting after 45 years), whom he ditched for Madhu, and then Madhu whom he had treated so shabbily first by not defending against his family and then pursuing his interest in and marriage to Tracy. He felt triumphant when in spite of "predictions" of some of the cinema folks he succeeded. He also strikes as the one who only focused for his work and never paid attention to the judgment of others-- sort of "don't-give-a-damn" attitude. He acknowledged many who had helped him--Johnny Walker for one-- and also others whom he had helped build their careers, but who had now forgotten him. He, however, takes this in stride as his good deed of the day. In the golden years of his life few had remembered him or visited him, and this naturally saddened him. His lasting friendship with Shubha Khote (one of the last ones to talk to him before his passing) was indeed a surprise. They made quite a successful pair on screen. However, their platonic relationship might have been an exception for Mehmood. Equally striking was Mehmood's secular disposition. This came as a total surprise to me. Unknowingly, in my mind I had almost labeled him as an orthodox, non-practicing or practicing-only-for-selfish-reasons Muslim.

Anyway, at the end the person who walked away with my total compassion was Madhu. I hold Mehmood solely responsible for driving her to ultimate desperation, depression, madness, loneliness and alcoholism. She, who gave him so much, got very little, and ultimately lost everything-- home, marriage and her children-- and tragically died young. What a reward for love and loyalty!!!

All Mehmood fans should read this book to get a true perspective on the star.

Solid, practical information. Easy to read and apply.

This is one of the best books available about the use of AAT in mental health practice. I've reviewed most of them for some research I'm doing in the field, and Dr. Chandler's is thorough, based on the latest research, easy to read and absorb, and filled with very practical information. She covers the tremendous benefits of this type of work along with necessary cautions, and emphasizes the importance of proper training and credentialing. The book is ideal for people just entering this fascinating field, but there is also lots of useful information for more experienced AAT practitioners as well.

Buy this one first!

I read this book in one sitting!!! I couldn't put it down until I had read the whole thing! This book is a spectacular addition to the counseling field in its own right, and fills an important gap left by other animal-assisted therapy (AAT) texts. Dr. Chandler has collected in a very engaging and readable form all one needs to know to effectively conduct AAT. I found the information and guidelines on AAT particularly useful, especially the sections emphasizing examples of therapeutic responses, uses of animals assisting in therapy, and the various requirements for certification. The pictures and descriptions of Dr. Chandler's own work with her 3 co-therapists were fun and informative as well. Before you buy any other book on AAT, buy this one first; read it, read it again, and then see the difference AAT really makes for counseling clients. On second thought, don't buy any other AAT books; this is the only one you'll need.

Good Grief 1 Learning from the Best
You know that famous book All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten? It’s about simple yet life-changing advice that the author remembers from his childhood, like “don’t hit people,” “share everything,” and of course, “flush.” I mention the book here because its premise reminds me of how I’ve come to deliver simple yet life-changing messages to my clients—except all I really need to know I learned from channeling God and your loved ones’ souls! They’re the most amazing teachers and have taught me so much about grief that can help you embrace life after a loved one passes.

I feel it’s important to credit God and Spirit right off the bat, because it helps explain why I say and recommend what I do. I’m not a therapist or bereavement counselor, and there’s probably some etiquette about handling grief that I’ve never been taught. As a medium, however, my duty is to tell you what Spirit feels will help you carry on without your late aunt, child, or spouse, and this can be very different from what a trained grief counselor might suggest. For example, Spirit needs you to know there’s more to life than what’s here in the physical world, and that your loved ones are still with you, just in a different way. Now, that’s not something most books about grief would drive home, fair enough? Yet this and other guiding principles from Spirit are what truly help my clients repair and rebuild their lives.

And while Spirit and I have helped bring hundreds of thousands of clients peace during their grief process, I don’t have a ton of heavy, personal experience with this topic in my own life. It’s kind of crazy—the first time I lost a close loved one was when my Nanny Brigandi passed away; I was sixteen years old at the time, and then seven years later, her husband, my Pop, died. It was really hard to lose my father’s parents. But after that, life gave me a major sabbatical from grief. For almost twenty years I didn’t experience a death-related heartache again. What did happen, however, was that I accepted and honed my ability to communicate with all kinds of souls in Heaven, including God, angels, spirit guides, and your departed loved ones who’ve taught me everything I know. In other words, I learned about healing through the universe’s lens, not my own. I was never distracted by my own drama and was forced to stay focused on Spirit’s messages. Having nearly two decades of constant, objective, spiritual training was part of God’s plan for me—and clearly for you too.
Getting the Gist of Grief
Since the beginning of my career, I’ve channeled a theme that runs throughout all of Spirit’s messages: “You will grieve your loss for the rest of your life, but healing is something different.” What Spirit means here is that you must find ways for your grief and healing to coexist, because no matter how a person dies, you will always have to live without someone you love and that sucks. I think one of the scariest things about death is that it introduces you to ugly emotions you’ve never felt before—devastation, jealousy, fear, betrayal, abandonment—and they hit you like a ton of bricks. To experience a death that’s so close to you might even force you to confront your own mortality for the first time. Grief is especially hard because it’s not every day that a situation demands you walk the line between feeling your heaviest feelings so you can heal and trying to protect yourself from getting stuck in a negative place. So instead of doing what’s best from the start—processing the loss, honoring your loved one, and carrying on in a positive way—you may end up on a dark and twisted path even when you crave light, direction, and calm.

What I love about Spirit’s guidance is that their goal is to help heal your soul. From there, they say, everything else will fall into place. For soulful healing to occur, you must realize that your loved ones give you permission to feel the pain, but also ask that you learn and grow from it. They explain that God and your loved ones want you to be happy. As you begin to internalize this, you see the importance of loving yourself and others, functioning with a positive outlook, and staying busy at a pace that feels good. This makes it easier to appreciate the signs your loved ones send and value the rapport you still share, since you trust that the soul bond is never broken. Having an ongoing relationship with the departed then makes it easier to value the living. You increasingly feel supported by souls on this plane and on the Other Side as you figure out your new normal. Grief gradually begins to define less of your day, because while death can be a painful reality for the living, you realize that your loved ones are at peace and their passing was never meant to stop your journey outright. You shed anger and practice forgiveness, and eventually you are able to appreciate the universe’s big picture: that everyone’s soul is created from God’s perfect love, and our purpose is to use that love to enrich your life and that of others.

At first, healing is about surviving heartache; in time, it’s about feeling joy despite it.

Listen, I’m not saying that any of this is easy. In fact, Spirit says healing from grief is one of the hardest obstacles we face on earth, but it’s important work that we must all do in this lifetime. Try as you might, nobody escapes this lesson—grief transcends cultures, social classes, education, genetics, and more—because navigating grief is essential to maturing every one of our souls. We gain new understanding, acceptance, compassion, and a better ability to communicate with the Other Side when we grieve. We are here on earth to learn and grow, and unfortunately grief is a means to that end. It is a rite of passage for the soul.
Practicing What I Preach
A few years ago, I was finally able to apply Spirit’s teachings to my own grief process. I should have known Spirit wouldn’t let me off the hook for too long! While my maternal grandmother, Gram, was the first person to pass after my little grief hiatus, it was actually her husband’s death that had the potential to emotionally wreck me if I hadn’t taken Spirit’s advice into consideration.

When my mom called to tell me that my grandfather, who we called Gramps, wasn’t doing well, I rushed to the hospital for a visit. I was in the middle of taping my TLC show Long Island Medium, and even in four-inch heels, I got there pretty fast! Right away, I felt Gram’s soul in the room and knew she was there to help him cross over. I said to Gramps, “It’s OK to go with Gram now.” He was weak and lethargic that day, but managed to shake his head no. Gramps was always stubborn, so I don’t know why I thought his passing might be any different! And though the next day Gramps was strong as an ox—sitting up, eating well—his burst of energy didn’t last. The following morning Gramps died. I did not get to say a final good-bye to my grandfather, who passed from complications from end-stage renal disease.

Now, somebody else in my sparkly shoes might have felt haunted by Gramps’s death—maybe upset about not visiting when he was at his best or regretful about not being with him when he died—but because I’d learned about grief for all those years, I was better able to cope. For one, I knew that our loved ones never want us to feel any burdens, guilt, or regrets around their passing. So instead of getting upset that I didn’t get to see Gramps full of piss and vinegar, I thanked God that our final visit was as good as it could be that day. And while I wasn’t with him when he passed, I also remembered that if Spirit says you’re not in the room at the time of a death, that soul did not want to leave you with the burden of seeing its body take its last breath. I believe this is the case with Gramps.

I’ve also followed Spirit’s advice in how I celebrate and remember Gramps to this day. I try to stay positive for the rest of the family, since this is what Gramps would have wanted, and regularly honor his memory. I’m quick to talk about how playful yet ornery Gramps could be, and every time I order his favorite split pea soup at the local luncheonette, I think of him and know his soul is with me as I do. When I miss Gramps, I remind myself that Spirit says, “The only thing that’s been broken is our physical connection. Our soul bond will never end,” and I know from channeling Spirit that I will see Gramps again when he greets my soul in Heaven. Until then, Gramps wants me to live in a way that makes me feel happy and spreads positivity to others. I grieve Gramps every day, but doing this under Spirit’s wing has helped me acknowledge his passing and feel appreciative of all we shared during this lifetime.

I’m not meant to be the only one who absorbs and practices Spirit’s healing lessons! God and your loved ones want this for you too. And while Spirit says our destiny is set, our freewill choices are what fill in the details of our lives. How you recover from loss is one such decision, and it impacts the strength of your eternal soul. Look, I know it’s broken into a million pieces right now. But it would be an honor and a privilege if you allowed me and Spirit to help you put it back together. What do you say?

I’d like you to buy a journal that you’ll use to work through some of your feelings, thoughts, and memories as we move through this book together. You will also use this space to complete guided exercises—and honestly, write about any other experiences you have during your grief process too. So find one you really love—red leather, leopard print, a composition book, it’s up to you! Excellent read for those who are and will be in grieving.

This is a very good read for those who have lost a loved one and is going through grieving process. This is also good for folks that does not know how to help someone that is grieving.
I've also read the other book "There's More to Life Than This: Healing Messages, Remarkable Stories, and Insight About the Other Side from the Long Island Medium" so there's not much new materials here. But it did help me to start praying to God again.
I've recently lost my first dog BeBe and had a grieving period and realized I've actually went through what Theresa had written. I know losing a dog is not the same as losing a person, but I see BeBe as my daughter and treated her as such.
After reading both books, I have so much questions that I would like to know. Perhaps Theresa's next book should be a Q&A. Let readers send in their questions and have her publish an answer book :-)

Learn to grieve and move on

I have bought and read Theresa's two previous books. Although this repeats some of the information in those books, it is still a very good read, especially if one is grieving for family or friends who have passed. I always wondered about Heaven, and there are some peeks of the Other Side. Very comforting.

Just starting reading the book. Already am liking it. I believe it will be a great help during my grieving. So far Theresa pulls no punches and is very likable and sincere.
