Unmotivating presentation and layout, reasonable content if organized better.

A lot of the information in the book is useful, but is so poorly organized that any student would be daunted by the lengthy process. The 'objectives' and the 'activity' suggested are generally appropriate, but the purpose of the book is lost in the detail. There is no brief introduction or short list of the headings to be covered to the lengthy dissertations that fill each chapter. Instead the student is required to wade through the lengthy explanations and then try to decipher what the author is actually trying to say. The main complaint is that it is not a workable textbook albeit that there is good information.

I bought this book thinking I would be better at essay writing. I used the book once, to see what was in it, and it had no use for me. I started writing better essays by just practicing and getting feedback from my teachers. Definitely not worth the money.

Got emotion? Get healthy.

The Way Back Home is about clearing out the buried emotions and patterns that follow us from childhood and sabotage our adult life and cause illness and disease. Bonnie's work as a master American shaman is similar to what we might find from the South American tradition. But don't let all that mumbo jumbo distract you. This book will bring up emotional stuff that you don't want to look at and will likely bring you to tears more than once. The text is clear, easy to read, and yet so powerful... because it hooks into your childhood wounding somewhere. I was breezing through it until I hit the sentence explaining that shy people live in fear. That hit home.
I have done a lot of work with Bonnie personally over the last 15 years and understand her methods well. But if you know her, you already have this book. So for those who say Bonnie who?, I can definitely confirm that she is a skilled healer with much insight to share with the world.
The book gives one case history after another, describing personal reactions and giving insights into what is really going on in their mental and emotional bodies. People who say "what happens in childhood stays in childhood" should move to Las Vegas. Those who think emotional intelligence is being smart enough to not feel your emotions can join them in one big denial party. We are humans, and our emotions and our lack of love in childhood have a huge daily impact upon our lives and relationships.
This book is about healing the old wounds and reclaiming and feeling our orphaned emotions, all those feelings we push away and deny, and they come back to make us sick.
Fairly well written throughout, with the exception of Werner's introduction, which needs help.
Highly recommended for spiritual and emotional growth!

Changed my life

When a friend recommended this book, I accidently bought it with "one-click" when I was trying to exit. It arrived when I was going through some deep emotional turmoil and when praying for guidance I saw this woman in my minds eye inviting me to come see her. It was Bonnie Serratore, the author of this book whose picture was on the back page. The book changed my life and after going to see Bonnie, my life changed even more. My direct experience with her and the powerful methods she describes in this book helped me bounce back quickly. It does feel like coming back home.

If you truly want to heal this is a must read

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is really ready and willing to heal their life. This is an easy and quick read that shows you step by step how to get to the root of what's really getting in the way of you having the life you want. It explains the causes of our deepest emotional pain and how to finally resolve it once and for all. There are so many different examples and anecdotes given you will surely see yourself in one or more of them. Finally, a self-help book that offers REAL help. It's a book you'll want to go back and read more than once!

Gr 7-10-This book picks up in the weeks after the shocking events at the end of The Compound (Feiwel & Friends, 2008) and basically recounts the fallout of the family members' escape from the compound, where they were locked away for six years, and the death of its brilliant but unstable patriarch. Justifiably shell-shocked, most of the Yanakakis clan, believing the world as they knew it has fallen, concentrate on shielding themselves from the intrusive media and survival nuts who want to know their story. Pages are devoted to them settling in to a new home, but nothing much really happens. Eli has been reunited with his twin, who avoided imprisonment at the faked Armageddon, and the narrative reveals what everyone eats and wears, and how they pass the time. Mom is furious that her husband's henchman, Phil, is in charge of YK Industries until the boys become 25, and they go to the company to make a show of interest. Eli randomly picks from many charitable involvements a folder detailing the Progeria Institute's grants and demands a visit to the facility. Lackluster plot elements are thrown in: an adopted older sister's interest in her birth parents; trips to Costco, a Mariner's game, and the aquarium; stomach flu; and people posting online with sightings of them. None is particularly compelling. It was a lie, one of many told by Eli’s brilliant but amoral father. Now, while trying to deal with the fallout (so to speak), Eli comes to believe that the horrors may not be over and that his father is still alive and hatching his next plan to control both his family and the world. Eli’s first-person narration increases the immediacy of this standalone psychological thriller. Though the prose can be didactic, the emotion and pacing are realistic, and Bodeen does a fine job conveying the characters’ paranoia and readjustment while living in the public eye after a sensational media event. Hints that the mad-scientist father is still on the loose, and enough action to offset the introspection, should make this appealing for a wide readership. Grades 8-11. --Cindy Welch

This Book Can Be Enjoyed By People Of All Ages

The Fallout is the sequel to The Compound. Now that Eli and his family are out of the compound, they find themselves in the spotlight. Eli is having a hard time adjusting to the outside world. People keep hounding them and he believes that someone is following them. It’s also clear that his father’s former advisor is still in control and that the experiment might not be over.

First things first, you will want to read The Compound before you start The Fallout. Although there is a lot of review of what happened, you are going to miss the bigger picture. From there, The Fallout has a slower pace and is more about the family. It’s so hard to watch Eli’s twin arguing about their father and what he did. You can see bother sides to the story and it’s hard to see the family fighting over this.

I think this is a good sequel. I can’t even begin to imagine everything Eli and his family are going through trying to adjust and being the center of media attention. Then to find that getting out of the Compound was just the beginning. Yes, this is a great book that many that like the dystopian stories will want to read. This book can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

An Intense Fast Read

I didn't read book one in this series and was curious to see if The Fallout could stand on its own. And it did.

I didn't feel at a disadvantage when reading this one. There's enough of a recap of the first book that I felt up to speed and I got the impression that, with the first book simply as background, the new book has significantly different plot elements to it.

Now, this is a little teen angsty. While I liked Eli, he felt a bit younger than he was supposed to be. Now, while that could be attributed to his time in the Compound, I expected a bit more maturity after everything he had seen and been through. I actually found myself liking and sympathizing a bit more with his brother.

The book is a fast read. It's pretty intense, but you do need to suspend your sense of disbelief on more than one occasion.

After reading this one, I have decided to go back and read the first one - not because I felt like I was missing something, but just because I'm curious to see how it all started.

Excellent conclusion to an awesome storyline

S.A. Bodeen is one of those hit or miss authors, who comes up with original -- and sometimes unimaginable -- plots and twists. I don't like all of S.A. Bodeen's books, but I did love The Compound and was especially excited to hear about The Fallout. While not quite as edge-of-your-seat as The Compound, The Fallout touches on the aftermath of Eli's life, after he and his family escape from their underground prison. They experience a few natural obstacles, like working out what happens to the family's fortune now that the family's 6 year death has been reversed. There is Phil to deal with. He is the father's assistant, who helped plot the underground experiment/imprisonment but still seems to be in charge of the family business. Then there is the media and the public, following the family everywhere, forcing them into yet another imprisonment trying to maintain their privacy. In addition to the family having to adjust, Eli's twin brother, who was rendered an orphan and only child after the "death" 6 years ago, has to readjust to having not only his mother and 3 siblings back, but an additional 4 babies. He also has good memories of his father and Phil, so he and Eli are conflicted between who is good and who is evil and who is trustworthy.

As is in the S.A. Bodeen fashion, there is a crazy twist toward the end that will either have you gasping in surprise....or maybe just rolling your eyes, going "Right. Of course." Either way, I thought it was a great sequel. I hope there are no more, though. The story is done and done well and any others might ruin it.
