Star Trek: Myriad Universes: Infinity's Prism (Bk. 1), by Christopher L. Bennett, William Leisner, James Swallow

It's been said that for any event, there are an infinite number of possible outcomes. Our choices determine which outcome will follow, and therefore all possibilities that could happen do happen across countless alternate realities. In these divergent realms, known history is bent, like white light through a prism -- broken into a boundless spectrum of what-might-have-beens. But in those myriad universes, what might have been...is what actually happened.

A Less Perfect Union: More than a hundred years after the Terra Prime movement achieved its dream of an isolationist Earth, humanity is once again at a fork in the river of history...and the path it follows may ultimately be determined by the voice of a single individual: the sole surviving crewmember of the first Starship Enterprise.™

Places of Exile: Midway through Voyager's journey across the galaxy, Captain Kathryn Janeway and Commander Chakotay must choose whether to brave a deadly war zone or abandon their quest for home. But an attack by Species 8472 cripples the ship, and the stranded crew must make new choices that will reshape their destinies...and that of the Delta Quadrant itself.

Seeds of Dissent: Khan victorious! Almost four centuries after conquering their world, genetically enhanced humans dominate a ruthless interstellar empire. But the warship Defiance, under its augmented commander, Princeps Julian Bashir, makes a discovery that could shake the pillars of his proud civilization: an ancient sleeper ship from Earth named the Botany Bay.

There was definitely something out there, coming their way.

Captain Christopher Pike kept his gaze fixed on the forward viewscreen as it once again rippled and distorted the star field ahead. Around him, his crew checked circuits and consulted readouts, attempting to determine what exactly was throwing the Enterprise's sensor array into such an uproar. A pair of oversized spaceborne rocks flew past them, both easily swept aside by the ship's forward deflectors. "Could be these meteorites," said Lee Kelso at his navigator's post.

"Meteoroids," the science officer corrected him in a haughty tone.

"No, it's...something else," said Number One, looking from the screen to the data readouts on the helmsman's console. "Something is still out there."

And as if to prove the first officer's claim, the Red Alert signal at the center of the forward console began to flash, and the harsh whoop of the alarm filled the bridge. The viewscreen distorted again and again, like a shallow pond being hit by a series of pebbles.

"It's coming at the speed of light," Kelso reported. "Collision course."

Number One turned to face the captain. "Evasive maneuvers, sir?"

Pike kept his eyes on the screen. "Steady as we go."

The first officer gaped slightly at that. "Captain, we have no idea what -- "

Pike looked away from the screen then, and directed the full power of his intense blue eyes toward the younger man. "Was my order unclear, Mister Kirk?"

Commander Jim Kirk hesitated a half second, then broke eye contact and turned back in his seat. "Steady as we go, sir."

Pike's glare lingered a moment longer on the back of Kirk's head. He knew he shouldn't have slapped him back quite so hard; he was taking a gamble on whatever it was coming at them, and Kirk had good reason to question the wisdom of flying at it straight on. Kirk was a good man, and the best first officer Pike had had in ten years -- and the only one in all that time with whom he'd felt comfortable using the nickname "Number One." But he was young, and more than a little cocky. And then, there was what had happened to the Galileo six months earlier...

Pike turned his attention back to the screen. It was warping wildly now, wavering almost like a flag in a stiff breeze, while the Red Alert klaxon continued its ear-piercing whoop-whoop-whoop. Still, no foreign object or vessels appeared on the distorted viewer, even as every sensor on every console indicated that they were seconds from impact.

And then, as suddenly as it had started, the alert ended, and the bridge fell silent except for the quiet chirps and bleeps of standard operation. Kirk and Kelso exchanged confused looks, while Pike waited for someone from one of the rear stations to officially confirm his suspicions.

It was, unsurprisingly, Alden at communications who figured it out first. "It's a radio wave, sir. We're passing through an old- style distress signal."

Pike nodded slightly. "They were keyed to cause interference and attract attention this way." He noticed Kirk had turned in his seat again, looking from Alden to the captain, looking properly chagrined. Looks like the old man still has a few tricks up his sleeve, eh, he thought. He wondered if the Academy even still bothered teaching cadets about subwarp emergency procedures.

"A ship in trouble, making a forced landing," Alden added, repeating the communication now coming through the miniature speaker he held to his right ear. "That's it, no other message."

From the other rear station, science officer Ann Mulhall picked up the report. "I have a fix. It originates from . . . inside Coalition territory."

The entire bridge crew reacted to that. Even Pike let his unflappable demeanor drop for a split second. Earth had been at odds with the Interstellar Coalition for over a hundred years, ever since the Vulcans, Andorians, Tellarites, and Denobulans decided to resume the catastrophically ended Coalition of Planets negotiations on their own, without Earth's participation. What the hell is a human vessel with an obsolete radio disruption beacon doing on their side of the border? Pike asked himself.

Mulhall continued, "Their call letters check with a survey expedition: S.S. Columbia. Reported missing twenty-nine years ago, in 2235."

Twenty-nine years ago -- meaning the radio wave had traveled twenty-nine light-years. "That's pretty deep into Coalition territory," Pike said.

The science officer nodded as she continued to scan her library file. "The ship was registered to the American Continent Institute. The expedition's mission..." She turned away from her monitor to face the rest of the bridge and offered them a wry expression. "...'to explore strange new worlds.' "

Inwardly, Pike sighed. He could picture them now: a menagerie of scruffy, gray-haired professors, clinging onto an outdated, romanticized notion of space exploration that had gone out of style with the Xindi attack. They'd no doubt ignored every warning once they left Earth, refusing to keep to the regularly traveled trade routes, wandering aimlessly through regions where no man had gone before -- or worse, where men had gone before, and had been warned not to go again, at least not without a fully charged phaser bank.

"Sir," Number One interrupted, "our charts show the signal originating near Talos, a star system with eleven planets. Long- range studies indicate the fourth planet could be Earth-type."

Pike hesitated. If the Columbia crew had managed to land on a habitable world, it was possible that, even three decades later, there could be survivors. The chances were achingly slim, though, and rescuing them would mean traveling through hostile territory.

The captain turned to meet the younger man's gaze. After their exchange earlier, his first officer hesitated to speak up and suggest the course of action he was contemplating. But even if Jim Kirk were a complete stranger to him, Pike could clearly read the thoughts in his eyes. They said that, if there was the slightest hope those humans were still alive, they couldn't just leave them.

Pike sighed. "Any indication of Coalition patrol ships in the area near Talos?"

Both Kirk and Kelso checked their boards. "Negative, sir," the navigator answered. "The system is well off their normal patrol and trade routes."

Pike set his jaw, then moved back to the center chair. "Address intercraft."

Kelso flipped a toggle switch on his console. "System open."

In his mind, Pike saw the entire crew on every deck pausing as the address system came to life. He lifted his head to address them all: "This is the captain. Our destination is the Interstellar Coalition. Our warp factor, five."

All decks reported back ready, and on his order to engage, they started for enemy territory.

There are, of course, no border lines in space. Nor are there any true natural landmarks, along the lines of rivers and mountain ranges, which can be reliably used to demarcate one region of space from another. The Vega Colony was indisputably one of United Earth's commonwealth worlds. Regulus, some nine light-years distant, was a long-time Vulcan base, and thus recognized as part of the Interstellar Coalition. Everything in between was more or less open to interpretation.

Jim Kirk interpreted the Enterprise's long-range sensor reading and astronavigational data, and tweaked the warp propulsion field's output just so, putting the ship on a course that he determined was as close as they could get to Coalition space without risking an interstellar incident.

Not that he would have been averse to trading a couple shots with the bastards, if it came to that. The Enterprise was one of Starfleet's top-of-the-line starships, Constitution class, named for the legendary American frigate. He had no doubt it would make small work of any Coalition ship that dared to challenge them.

"Coming up on the Robinson Nebula," Kelso reported.

"On-screen," Pike ordered. For a moment, Kirk wondered if the viewer was malfunctioning again, as the only change, so far as he could tell, was that the image of the starscape ahead of them dimmed, with a small area devoid of stars at the center. But then, the captain said, "Enhance image," and striations of color brought the dark matter mass into relief, highlighting its characteristic radiation patterns and gravitational energies.

"My god, will you look at that?" Ann Mulhall spoke in an awed whisper, looking from the main viewing screen to the image inside her station's hooded display, and then back again. "Captain...is there any way we could redirect one high-res sensor cluster -- "

"All available sensors are directed toward the Columbia coordinates,"

Pike said before she'd even finished asking the question. "That's the only reason we're here." The captain's expression softened just a fraction then. "Sorry, Lieutenant."

Mulhall nodded, accepting the captain's decision, but she was still disappointed. "Jonathan Archer discovered this nebula on his Enterprise, back in 2153," she informed the rest of the bridge. "We may be the first Earth ship to visit it since."

"So?" Lee Kelso asked. "It's just another cloud of dust and hydrogen."

"No, it's not," Mulhall said, with more than a hint of exasperation in her tone. "It's a dark matter nebula."

"Okay. And?"

"And, dark matter was still only theoretical up until Archer's time. We still know almost nothing about its nature, how it's formed, anything."

"Which brings us back to my original question: So?"

"That's enough," Kirk warned the two before the captain had to speak up himself. He understood that Lee's comments were intended as nothing more than good-natured ribbing, of the kind he and Ann often enjoyed engaging in. But he also understood how Mulhall felt as a career scientist who wasn't always content to simply recite the readouts from her station's displays. The term "science officer" was something of an anachronism, carried over from the old days when the United Earth Space Probe Agency was an exploratory organization as well as a military o...

2 out of 3 are either one worth the price!
By David Mellizson
Alternate universes and what-ifs are -- obviously -- the life-blood of science fiction. Two of the three stories in this volume live, one just sags.

"A Less Perfect Union" features Christopher Pike at the helm and James T. Kirk as his second in command. Characters from throughout the original canon appear, including the animated series. I rated it tops until I read "Seeds of Dissent" the DS9 version in the book.

Again, capturing elements from earlier mainstream stories, it ranks as one of the few stories I've ever read that I could not stop once I had started it, and that is in the Trek universe or any other work of fiction -- and I write from the perspective of a 61 year old Trekker (I was there when it started). When Kirk banished Khan to Ceti Alpha 5, Spock wondered what it would be like to see what crop sprang from the seed they had planted. James Swallow lets us see what happened when Khan won the Eugenics War. Outstanding!

"Places of Exile," the Voyager installment, reads like one of the early Next Generation TV shows -- tea and talk. If you don't have anything else to read, read it, but you won't miss much by skipping it.

But don't let that stop you from buying this book!

A Review of "Infinity's Prism"
By Antoine D. Reid
Star Trek: Myriad Universes - 'Infinity's Prism' is an ambitious project that's been in the works for years. This is the 'what if' series of novellas exploring all the avenues and paths not taken in the various Star Trek series and movies. The question is, does "Myriad Universes" please the audiences or does it fall victim to being over-the-top, glorified fan fiction? For me, was by far one of the stronger anthologies and mini series put out in the past few years. Usually, there is one story included that feels far weaker and unworthy of print and makes me regret purchasing the book. That wasn't the case with "Myriad Universes: Infinity's Prism". It has some minor flaws that keep it from being perfect but in all, it's a wonderful work of fiction that definitely makes you wish the shows had been willing to take these bold chances and directions with plots and characters.

You'll enjoy how each story tends to capture the spirit of the original series. Each story, to me, comes with a lesson or moral that the writer is putting out for the audience to pick-up on. I was beside myself with the greatness of 'A Less Than Perfect Union'. This story is a blend of Star Trek: Enterprise and the Original Series. This was your classic original series episode with a twist; what would have happened if Starfleet and the Star Trek universe had not been as open minded and in turn was xenophobic? An elderly T'Pol (seen on the cover) is the last surviving member of Archer's Enterprise and through her, we see the alternate history of Enterprise and Pike/Kirk dealing with an Earth that isn't so great. The last novel, 'Seeds of Dissent' takes on a similar theme of exploring the question of 'who writes the history?' as Khan manages to reign over Earth and a rather interesting group of people threaten Khan's legacy and force a genetically enhanced Bashir to re-evaluate the past. Both of these stories, for me, were on the epic scale and a fun read with an actual lesson.

What you may not like is the quick-pace of many of the stories. While it worked for "A Less Than Perfect Union" and "Seeds of Dissent", it didn't work as well for "Places of Exile". The Voyager story came off as the most fan-fiction of the novellas. This was more like a different take or spoof of "Year of Hell" as there are few lessons to be learned and this was just pure entertainment. It wasn't bad but by the end, the story felt rather forced and cheesey. I also felt that even with this being a 'different view' of Star Trek: Voyager, the characters felt very off and unbelievable. This problem also arises in 'Seeds in Dissent' as Kira and Dukat, as well as Bashir, aren't really given any foundation and read as if they are rather plain and stiff, if not over-the-top.

In all, a good read. Yes, there is a fan-fic lining to some of the stories but that's to be expected. What made 'Infinity's Prism' such a good read was that it accomplished the goal of exploring some interesting 'what if' situations in Trek and as you're reading it, your mind begins to run wild with your own ideas of other stories that could be told. I liked that some stories, such as "A Less Than Perfect Union" weren't just entertaining - it was thought provoking and a great allegory to modern times. I enjoyed the 'dark' theme seen in 'Deep Space Nine' running throughout "Seeds of Dissent" which features a host of DS9 characters. Definitely worth your time and money.

Almost Better Than the Original
By J. Mark Graham
So, I really like Star Trek, and science fiction in general. But one of the most annoying problems with the genre is the inability to tackle the consequences of being human. Recently I've been trying to branch out into science fiction and really found it barely comprehendable, because of the inability to make the worlds convincing in a human fashion. Particularly the use of genetic enhancements and super elongated life spans. Otherwise known as a literary device known as deus ex machina. Commonwealth Saga and The Dreaming Void, I'm looking at you. Star Trek isn't completely immune to this, but in Deep Space 9 TV and books and the Alternate Universe they just nail this. People are PEOPLE. While there are many many great things to say about this collection of stories, all of these stories just get it right, to a greater or lesser extent, but on a fundamental level.

For this review, I'll tackle each story individually and then look at the themes that run through each of them and how they fit together as a whole, in comparison to the rest of recent Star Trek books. For brief story summaries, go the the book's Amazon Page.

A Less Perfect Union is a great start to the collection. First of all, the story flows in a natural fashion, particularly if you have a rough grasp of the background of the original series. These alternate or 'myriad' universes as they call them can create authorial nightmares in terms of exposition and development. Because of the established characters and the mental acknowledgement the reader has that these are going to be different, particularly The Original Series characters, its way too easy to overload on plot exposition and positioning characters within the new universe, but this story just does that very well. Particularly by gradually introducing characters in a natural fashion, like Doctor McCoy. The story itself isn't all that strong, mostly because a significant plot point requires a significant oversight by a major character, but the strength of the universe as a realistic and well-developed setting really makes this story work.

8.5/10

Places of Exile is in my opinion the weakest story of the three, but not really by the fault of the author, who did a fine job of building the characters of the arguably the worst Star Trek series. Where the story kind of hiccups is in Species 8472/Scourge/Groundskeepers, which I can't really blame the author for again because they were really difficult to flesh out. I was intrigued by the general plot premise, and thought the developing of the Delta Coalition to be just a whole lot of fun to experienced. Immigration issues are touched on in a political way, but again like a great deal of this collection just flows naturally. One thing that I really appreciated is the consequences of the deaths of the major characters. B'Elanna's collapse after the death of Tom was totally believable, espeically since it reminded my of the earlier seasons of Voyager, before it all descended into madness. Not only that, I missed Tuvok. There were moments where I just wanted to see Tuvok. So while the plot is a bit iffy, again the new setting works really well, the development of the Delta Coalition was natural (if way too fast timewise. No way Voyager could create a Delta Federation in under two years.) and well fleshed out, and they touched a grand scale that was great to see.

8.0/10

Seeds of Dissent is one of the best stories I've ever read period. Despite being the shortest story of the three, it flows in a natural fashion over a short period of time that makes it feel like you have experienced these events. The pacing is masterful, and the creativity on display was masterful. The development of the characters of Julian Bashir and Ezri Dax in particular were very well done. One of the literary techiniques that Swallow uses is a natural perspective shift. As the story begins, it begins through the perspective of Bashir, but as the plot quickens the perspective gradually to Ezri Dax. Not only that, but the characterization of Bashir is wonderful, and the universe-in-a-bottle that is created in the Defiance just feels authentic and very very unique. The only real weakness I feel is the crew of the Botany Bay, who feel like filler rather than actualy characters, but that just seems like a consequence of the direction of the plot. But overall, quite simply on of the best stories I've ever read.

9.5/10

As a whole, these stories work really well together. The universes are each truly unique, touching on great points. Thematically though with each universe, is that the standard Star Trek universe isn't necessarily better. The best example is Places in Exile, where the what-if scenario is explicitly 'better' than how the canon universe turned out to be. In most other alternate universe stories, the universe is distinctly worse, but these scenarios aren't necessarily worse. While A Less Perfect Union and Seeds of Dissent universes had discintly negative turning point, but these universes have a natural feel to them that even the Alternate Universe doesn't have. In the end, the transition from the Alternate Universe to these Myriad Universes is a great transition for the Star Trek book series, that allows a creative foundation while freeing the authors to create very realistic and unique universes. Kudos to the authors for taking this concept and executing it exceptionally well.

Overall 9.0/10

High-quality, and not just for healthcare
By Dimitri Shvorob
I skipped this book (plus a stinker by Crofts) in my original round-up of Tableau titles - eight books in total - and would not want potential readers to repeat my mistake, expecting the book to be healthcare-specific, and not knowing how well-produced and visually attractive it is. Indeed, "Tableau for Healthcare" is the best-looking book out of the ten Tableau titles I have seen - "Tableau for Dummies" and "Tableau 9: The Official Guide" are nearly as pretty, the rest are not even close - and it is a very good Tableau introduction, on par with "Tableau for Dummies" and "Communicating Data with Tableau". If you are a Tableau beginner, these three books are the only ones you need to consider. Each one has a different style, so one's choice is a matter of personal preference: get all three, and see which one(s) you like.

PS. Should you consider doing Tableau certification, be warned: you have six months to take the exam. The warning is easy to miss - compared with that you get when taking a Qlik or Microsoft cert exam with Pearson VUE - and the exam's shelf life is half as long as Pearson's, as if missed deadlines (and free money for Loyalist, Tableau's no-name testing partner) were part of the business plan. I unwittingly missed the deadline - as it happens, by a single day - and was told to get lost by both Loyalist and Tableau. I have had a chance to observe Qlik's response to a similar customer request, and that was simply helpful; Tableau's, on the other hand, was North Korea meets Kafka. (Engage with Loyalist on behalf of some test taker? They cannot even be bothered to fix the errors in their sample exam). Don't get into this situation.

Very good book; would like to have seen more in depth discussion of calculated fields, level of detail, writing custom equations, and some of the thought processes surrounding view and function selections. For example, when is it better to use groups, over sets, over filters, etc.

A fine book...
By RGB_R
This is a fine book. Here are some reasons why:

1. They book will walk you step by step as to what you need to do with regards to producing a viz. You will not be confused as of what to do.
~ In contrast another book that I am going through - not a Tableau book - says things like "Drag and drop X." and you are like "Okay. Where?" - because there are multiple places you can do that.

2. The book covers items that I have not (so far) seen elsewhere (e.g. the Table Lens, Deviation chart) and seems to be worth knowing.

3. The step-by-step walk through visuals are spot-on.
~ Again - you will not be confused as of what you are supposed to do next. Description and chart are supplied.

4. Overall aesthetics of the book are quite good. Its in full color. Techie books often are not like this.

5. The end of each chapter has this section titled HDVizoom where all the steps for everything you did within the chapter to create X or Y are laid. So if you need to review how to create something and don't want to go through the whole chapter... just go here. Very nice.

All that said, one minor knock against it.

1. Its terse. The book will tell you exactly what you need to know regarding something, like say what the blue and the green pills are but may not elaborate any additional bit on the why's of the pills. So you won't find say an excursus on this or that topic so if you are scratching your head wanting to know more... but then again this is Tableau for Healthcare so a bunch of the people that pick up this book might be physicians, nurses, pa's, etc., and they may not want to get bogged down in details that an IT guy might care about.

... which actually lead me to another pro with the book: This is about the healthcare world. It is about real world stuff. You are creating visuals that have to do with actual hospital stuff - you are not simply creating a chart of some generic store with widgets sold.

Chosen by Garison Keillor for his readings on public radio's The Writer's Almanac, the 185 poems in this follow-up to his acclaimed anthology Good Poems are perfect for our troubled times. Here, readers will find solace in works that are bracing and courageous, organized into such resonant headings as "Such As It Is More or Less" and "Let It Spill." From William Shakespeare and Walt Whitman to R. S. Gwynn and Jennifer Michael Hecht, the voices gathered in this collection will be more than welcome to those who've been struck by bad news, who are burdened by stress, or who simply appreciate the power of good poetry.

From Booklist
Having revived the radio variety program with A Prairie Home Companion Garrison Keillor turned to broadcasting poetry in the daily short feature The Writer's Almanac. In any given week, probably more people hear him read poems than attend poetry readings and slams. That's good because his taste is excellent. But then, his criteria are golden. For him, a poem is good if it's memorable, recitable, and accessible. The almost-unheard-of-for-poetry sales of Good Poems (2002) suggest that many endorse his taste and criteria, and the sequel to that success gives them no reason to change their minds. As before, the range of poets represented is broad contemporarily (the majority are alive or very recently deceased) and historically (sixteenth to twenty-first century), though not internationally, for, with one exception (Psalm 51), English is these poems' language of origin. As before, too, these are predominantly poems of domesticity and ordinary things, and when a poem touches the genuinely extraordinary, it is related to everyday life; for instance, Stephen Dobyns' "Thelonious Monk" relates a particular instance of a kind of experience virtually everyone has--the discovery of greatness. Even those tired of Lake Wobegon, or who think Keillor's a bigoted Democrat (especially after Homemade Democrat, 2004), should grant that he knows good poetry. Ray Olson

Good Poems for the Common Man--and Woman: "I Wish I Had Danced More."
By Foster Corbin
Garrison Keillor continues in his quest to bring poetry to the man and woman on the street in this his third collection of poems "as heard on the Writer's Almanac." Certainly he is to be commended for being the one individual who has done more than anyone else-- with the possible exception of perhaps Bill Collins--to bring new poetry converts into his church. Many is the time that I have sat in my car, having arrived at my destination before Mr. Keiller has finished his poem for the day in that immediately recognizable soothing voice of his, to get a fix for the day from his reading. (And sometimes I have ordered an obscure volume of poetry from an unknown poet he has just read, only to discover that too often Mr. K. has read the best poem in the collection!)

No amateur with words, himself, Mr. Keillor writes a decent introduction about his childhood in Minnesota, family travels, and how grade school teachers ruin poetry for our youth. "Americans are impatient with riddles and so they give poetry a wide berth, knowing from Miss Fernwood's 8th grade English class that a page of writing with an uneven right margin means a series of jokes with no punch lines, a puzzle with no right answers." Too often poets whom Keillor describes as "upward-striving" write about Europe, but not the writers he has selected in this collection of over 260 poems. He gives a whole laundry list of subjects that these poems write about, purely American, and Europe be damned.

Mr. Keillor includes a lot of poems from poets I know and like: Wendell Berry, Robert Bly, Charles Bukowski, Raymond Carver, Billy Collins, Stephen Dunn, Allen Ginsberg, Donald Hall, Robinson Jeffers, Galway Kinnell, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Grace Paley, Kenneth Rexroth, Theodore Roethke, W. D. Snodgdrass, Gary Snyder, William Stafford, John Updike, James Tate, Marge Percy, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Sara Teasdale, May Sarton, Donald Justice, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Carlos Williams, Anne Sexton, Dana Gioia--and of course the father and mother of twentieth century American poetry, Mr. Whitman and Ms. Dickinson. Mr. Keiller even includes Johnny Cash for his "Folsom Prison Blues." (I cannot imagine, however, hearing anyone read this poem rather than sing it.)

There are even more poets I've never heard of in this big collection in praise of America. My two favorites are from poets previously unknown to me: The first is "Bridal Shower" by George Bilgere, a poem that resonated with me to the 12th power. I suspect others feel just as strongly about people who talk on cell phones in public. Here is the poem in its entirety.

Perhaps in a distant caf,
Four or five people are talking
With the four or five people
Who are chatting on their cell phones this morning
In my favorite caf.

And perhaps someone there,
Someone like me, is watching them as they frown,
Or smile, or shrug
At their invisible friends or lovers,
Jabbing the air for emphasis.

And, like me, he misses the old days,
When talking to yourself
Meant you were crazy,
Back when being crazy was a big deal.
Not just an acronym
Or something you could take a pill for.

I liked it
When people who were talking to themselves
might actually have been talking to God or an angel.
You respected people like that.

You didn't want to kill them,
As I want to kill the woman at the next table
With the little blue light on her ear
Who has been telling the emptiness in front of her
About her daughter's bridal shower
In astonishing detail
For the past thirty minutes.

O person like me
Phoneless in your distant cafe,
I wish we could meet to discuss this,
And perhaps you would help me
Murder this woman on her cell phone,

After which we could have a cup of coffee,
Maybe a bagel, and talk to each other,
Face to face.

The second poem, from a section named "Never Expected To Be There" is on a totally different subject, one that will tear your heart out, "Meadowbrook Nursing Home" by Alice N. Persons. The narrator of the poem takes her cat Lucy, who is fifteen and "getting creaky herself," to visit Mrs. Harris in a nursing home. Mrs. Harris speaks:

"I had a cat called Lily--she was so pretty, all white.
She was with me for twenty years, after my husband died too.
She slept with me every night--I loved her very much.
It's hard, in here, since I can't get around."

Lucy was settling in on the bed.
"You won't believe it, but I used to love to dance.
I was a fool for it! I even won contests.
I wish I had danced more.
It's funny, what you miss when everything. . . . . is gone."
This last was a murmur. She'd fallen asleep.

The narrator then goes home and dances to Tina Turner. This poem, to paraphrase Mr. Keillor in describing Emily Dickinson's poetry in his first collection of poems GOOD POEMS, will take your head off.

Thank you, Mr. Keillor, for another fine collection of poems with something for everyone.

A Gem on Every Page
By Olga Drucker
Having Good Poems for Hard Times, by Garrison Keillor on my book shelf is like having a big bouqet of flowers of many colors in my home. I purchased this (and others) from Amazon, and was pleased how fast I found it in my mailbox. There's a poem for everyone between the covers of this book, even for those who've never read a poem before, or say they don't like poetry! From well-known poets of the past to more modern ones I had never heard of, each poem has a special meaning just for me. As it will for you. So I bought a couple more from Amazon, for my friends. Good Poems for Hard Times will make great Christmas presents.

I keep my little volume beside my bed, and pick a flower from it whenever I'm in the mood - which is often. Makes me want to read Mr. Keillor's other poetry selections.

A huge sticker on the front obscured part of the author and title. It was a pain to take off and ripped part of the cover. Besides that this book is great, has wonderful content and I would recommend it to people interested in getting into poetry.

Worst textbook I have ever used.
By Smith18
I won't go into much detail about the frustrating and inadequate nature of this book, as many others have already done so. Basically, all you need to know about this book is that it is a waste of time. The author rarely explains anything with sufficient detail and seems to expect you to already know an incredible amount about aircraft structures. My TA even told us that we had better come to class every day, because the textbook is pretty much worthless.

I wondered why anyone would force students to waste money on a book that is cleary insufficient, but then I recognized the author's name. It seems the only reason why I am forced to buy this book is because the author is a professor at my school.

Just stay away from this book if you can.

This book is not very usable if this is the first time you are seeing this material. Everything is presented as if only for review and you have already learned all the material before. I would pass on this book if possible

Wish I could give it zero stars
By Jim
This is arguably one of the WORST engineering text books I have ever used. Forget about how expensive a book with such little content is, I can let that part slide.

1) This book is so poorly laid out and written, it is difficult to put my frustration into words. It frequently references figures several pages away, and equations are rarely effectively derived. To fully understand the derivations, expect to have to reference several other sources. It is pretty clear that the publishers sole intent was to cram this stuff into as small of a book as possible. You will waste a ton of time flipping back and fourth all over the place.

2) The example problems in the book are obscenely simple compared to the actual chapter problems and leave many questions unanswered. One may argue that I should be able to figure out the questions I have on my own from the text, which I can, however it is such a huge waste of time when a few extra lines would make it much easier to understand.

3) The chapter on "composites" is an absolute joke. It is a token explanation of very basic composite theory and having taken an entire course on composites, I can say it is basically useless for any practical purpose.

4) The fact that this book only covers 2-D shear flow is again, a testament to the usefulness (or should I say uselessness) of this book and is well suited to people who like solving math problems but will never be able to actually apply knowledge to the real world.

I own 1 other text book and have seen another sold on Amazon on the same subject that are SIGNIFICANTLY better than this. Do yourself a favor and purchase any other textbook and just copy homework problems from a class mate.

This is an amazing book. I'm going to teach a confirmation class next year and this has so many worksheets (2 on confirmation, one of God's Attributes, one on Whom Do You Follow, one on the Holy Spirit, one on We Are the Body of Christ, one on Communion, one of gifts, one on the bible, one on listening to God Speaking, one on Sanctification, one on Your Life's Purpose, one on Stewardship, and one on Prayer) that I plan to incorporate into my class. I have some of the other books in this series but I really LOVE this one. Great approach.

Not all of us pastors are really cut out for Junior High youth. This product helps a lot with those of us who are junior high challenged but still need to do ministry in that area. They give both direction and focus and are great for doing small group discussion after the teaching.
