Lilly has her own way of doing things, and Chester and Wilson don't know quite what to make of her until the day she uses one of her disguises to frighten off some misbehaving older boys. Chester and Wilson look at Lilly in a new light, and discover that the three of them have more in common than they previously believed, and that perhaps different ways of doing things are just fine. Narrator Laura Hamilton keeps listeners engaged with her terrific intonation and distinct voice for each character. Background music and sound effects enhance the tale. This is where we meet Lilly!!

Chester likes things his way, and he and his friend Wilson get along because they like things the same way. And then wonderful Lilly moves into the neighborhood and shakes everything up! The boys don't like her different ways at first and avoid her as best as possible, but when Lilly rescues them from some bullies, they realize that Lilly is worth the chaos she brings to their previously very ordered lives, and she's really more fun than chaos.

Belly Laughin Four year old!!!

My four year old loves this book, when Lilly does her stuff my son loses it, he actually gets belly laughs. We read his book five nights in a row when we first got it, and we didn't mind reading it over and over. Lilly really is a crack up. The moral is great. I have since bought "Julius Baby of the World" and we have read this the past three nights in a row, and we look forward to reading more by Kevin Henkes.

Straightforward and good history and explanation of ISIS / the Islamic State

I ordered this based on Charles Lister's reputation, as well as the fact that Ahmed Rashid wrote the foreword. Lister has studied the Middle East for both Janes and Brookings. When the book arrived I was surprised to realize how short it is. I'm actually glad it didn't turn out to be a thick academic tome. It's very readable, and I finished this in two evenings. I feel like I now have a solid understanding of where ISIS came from and what the dynamics are that have made them so successful in their deplorable pursuits and actions.

Brilliantly researched and well written

Charles Lister's book is a an absolute must read for anyone seriously studying the ISIL dilemma. In fact, it has led me to a topic for my thesis. Mr. Lister is a renowned expert on the subject, so you can't go wrong by reading this. What is the most important thing I took out of this book? ISIL has two faces- one for the public, and another that is very close hold- that of a tightly ran bureaucracy led at the highest levels by Saddam Hussein's former officers. Charles' description of the intelligence driven ops behind the fall of Mosul, as well as the tactics used by ISIL in Jalula opened my eyes to the true nature of this threat. Brilliantly researched and well written. Thank you Mr. Lister.

More policy recommendations than a history...but interesting for that

This book is short enough at 85 Kindle pages to be considered a pamphlet or monograph and yet it clearly outlines the genesis and development of ISIS in Iraq and Syria. It focuses more intensely on ISIS strengths and weaknesses rather than ideology. Rather than detail accounts of successes in the field or Western attempts to combat ISIS, it assumes a conversant and sympathetic Western audience. He has a more in-depth treatment due to be published in the U.K. in November this year (Hurst) and the U.S. in 2016 (Oxford Univ Press), called THE SYRIAN JIHAD: AL-Qaeda, the Islamic State and the Evolution of an Insurgency. Lister is a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Doha Center in Qatar, Senior Consultant at The Shaikh Group, and formerly head of MENA at IHS Jane’s Terrorism & Insurgency Centre in London.

While many radical insurgents originated in Saudi Arabia, Lister makes clear that is began originally as opposition to the Saudi monarchy, therefore correcting what might be a misapprehension among observers: since many radicals issued from Saudi, one might conclude that the country fostered them, when in fact, they caused them. The fact remains that the Saudi government did little to curb radical ideologies originating on their soil, and did, in fact, make much of its opposition to the Shia sect’s power and control, as well as sponsoring or condoning the adoption of the variant of Wahhabism that is the ISIS creed.

It has a strict bureaucratic hierarchy which gives it some reach into the organizations it claims. It has gathered to itself disaffected and trained military men from throughout the Islamic world, has released from prison captured radicals and utilized their talents, and uses social media, including English-language outlets, effectively.

ISIS is not currently waging a war against the West. This makes it essentially different from Al Qaeda. ISIS is intent upon establishing a trans-national caliphate of their particular brand of Islam, which has, in effect, caused such sectarian strife in affected countries that ISIS may be able to capitalize in the vacuum of governance. This broad-yet-narrow outlook may be an exploitable weakness: their violence against Muslims who do not adhere to their stated tenets promotes violence against their movement, and governments accustomed to operating within state boundaries will oppose any incursion on their soils. The civilians on the ground may well oppose a trans-national caliphate based on Wahhabism but have fewer options available to them.

Lister’s work already seems a little out of date, for just yesterday we heard that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, in talks with Russia and Turkey, stated a willingness to consider Assad remaining in power, while Lister defends the position taken by the U.S. last year: that Assad must go. Great concept, Poor execution of the idea

This book has an amazing title and concept but the execution left me sorely disappointed. I love creative architecture and happen to be working on an art project that could benefit from having such a book, so I thought it would be a win win. The title and preview of this book caught my eye, and I judged a book by it's cover, preview and title. There is a nice section on Gothic architecture, about 3 pages long of drawing references, but the other sections are pathetic in comparison. The Middle Eastern section (some of the most beautiful architecture in the world) was short and repeated similar images of virtually identical cubic buildings. Many of the sections repeated imagery that was virtually identical and some boorish. I am giving it 3 stars because it had some nice references and some good drawing details on Gothic architecture, and a scarce few in the other sections. The digital paintings were hit and miss. Some appeared lovely (like the cover), and some were blurry and hard to reference detail. This would be fine if detail was provided in the drawing example of each styled section as much as it was in the Gothic section, but it's not. I recommend looking at the book in a bookstore before buying it on here. It does not hold up to it's title which is how to draw fantasy architecture. It's more like a poor reference book with some drawings and basic advice on what tools to use (which for some reason is in the back of the book rather than the front). If you are going into fantasy architecture drawings, I think it's safe to say you are not a beginner, but if you are this section is not bad, but not great either. There were also references and explanations of different lighting in the back which were helpful. Either way the Gothic section showed what this book could have been, a nice reference book with several pages of well thought out detail for each section. But for whatever reason the author did not follow through in this manner with the other sections at all.

While the title is misleading, it's still a good book for your collection

I have to agree with other reviewers. There is no actual instruction on how to draw anything. It's more of a theory book. For example, it talks about perspective but doesn't show you how to draw in perspective. So if you're looking to learn how to draw a cathedral or other structures, you won't get that. The area I was excited about was details and textures because I thought it was going to teach how to draw those textures, but those weren't great tutorials. I read the instructions, but it didn't quite help me achieve the techniques on the canvas.
The other issue that I have is that about 50% of the book isn't even about architecture. It was about color theory, composition, perspective, etc. Which was all interesting, but those are things you learn from other books. More theory books.
I didn't think it was all bad though. What I did love and wished there was more of was the first chapter that talked about different styles and history of architectural structure. This was very inspiring and gave me a direction to go when researching references for my drawings.
While I didn't believe that chapter that talked about lighting, composition, and color were useful for the type of book I thought I was reading, I did feel there was a lot of great knowledge there that was really helpful. If you don't mind having these subjects in this book, then you will find that to be a positive, because it was really well put together and in depth. The same is true for the texture section as well.
Overall, it's a great book for my collection, because there was a lot of good information that is useful to me, so I will be returning to it again and again. However, if you're looking for a how to book that shows you how to draw these structures, then this is not the book.

Love this book!

I've wanted to buy this book for a long time and I'm glad I finally did! Rob Alexander presents us with background information about various historical architectural periods, how and why certain types of architecture were built, and gives us basic artistic construction information. After showing examples from artisans of the period (from kings to paupers), he puts these skills to work and creates wonderful fantasy architecture and amazing landscapes where anything in our imagination can be possible. His skills and talents are amazing and his architecture is fascinating. He provides basic explanations, general instructions for the architecture, and insightful guidance concerning the use of light, dark, color, shape and form to direct the viewers eyes throughtout the landscape created. He provides keypoints and strategies for light, shadow, values, shade, perspective, distance, depth, composition, concept, color, mood, and drama. He provides information about the grain and texture of wood, how it's carved, painted, and joined--so we can recreate authentic looking artwork. He provides similar information concerning working with stone--in walls, buildings, and nature. He provides details about creating marble--in new, weathered, and crumbling buildings. He also details how to create mosaics and painted tiles that look new or aged. Finally, he details how to create the look of fire damage to exterior and interior buildings--what's the value of a fantasy world where there aren't opponents, demons, or dragons to bring destruction and decay to whatever humans create? Alexander's brilliant illustrations presented throughout this book provided me with lots of examples to practice on, and they have initiated even more ideas for scences I want to create. I've had fun exploring the various architectural styles and artistic tecniques. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in fantasy architecture.

Simply Atrocious

This book is AWFUL. Riddled with errors in both the example problems and the solutions. Seriously, I'm not making this up. 5/40 of the practice problems in just the Probability section of the book have blatant miscalculations (no pun intended). example: a question totals 5+10+15+20+25=85. It's 75!!! Some of the others aren't as obvious, which is even worse because you'll learn incorrect solutions!!

The binding on the book has even come apart! I'm sending the book back to the publisher after I'm through editing it for them. This has at least reassured me in my ability to pass the exam.

Don't waste your money

Don't waste your money. As a few others have said, there are errors all over the place. Some sections are better than others, but quite frequently the numbers provided in a problem statement aren't always the ones plugged into the answer, so you'll waste time trying to figure out where you went wrong, when you solved the problem correctly. I found errors in sections that weren't even my strengths. The reviews/material summaries in each section are somewhat helpful, especially if it's been a while since first studying the material. Save your money and invest in the Lindeburg books. I expected more from Kaplan.

Original and Great

The Ables was a extremely well thought out and executed novel. The book had me captivated the whole time I was reading it. Part of the reason it was so great was how original it was. The main characters all of whom have a disability of some form or another made the telling of this story very unique. I don't know about you but a disabled superhero story is something I have never read before. I have read a lot of superhero books before and while this may not be the absolute best of all of them it is definitely up there. I read this book all day for about 12 hours straight. It really is that good. If you're a fan of superhero books you need to read this one. If you're a fan of just great fiction you should read it too.

A good idea, and even better execution.

I gave The Ables a five star review because I truly enjoyed the story, and think that it was an original and well executed idea. However, the finished product was difficult to read at points, and my immersion was broken at several points throughout the journey. If you are looking for a fast, well written, and original young adult story about truly ‘handicapable’ children, then The Ables is for you. Just be prepared to scratch your head over formatting, chapter design, and the occasional missed detail. Below are spoilers for the book, and I would recommend that anyone who is interested in reading it stop now.

Let’s get the bad out of the way, and then end on a high note.
First off, the entire formatting of the book was a confusing choice. Having non indented paragraphs with large spaces between them was distracting and difficult to ignore. My thought is that the author did this intentionally to imitate how I imagine brail might read. Large spaces to separate thoughts and an unattractive presentation that is easier for the blind to read. If that was an intention decision then I applaud the originality. If it wasn’t, well… I would just pretend that it was.
I also noted several errors in formatting. One paragraph was split at the end leaving three words floating, another chapter ended on what I assume was supposed to be the heading of the following page, and several pages were left entirely blank. As a self-published author myself I understand how difficult it can be to catch everything, but some of these were fairly obvious, and a quick look would have found them.
I also found myself confused on the time line of things. One chapter would end, then in the next the character says it’s been weeks when it only read like one day. I went back several times to ensure I didn’t miss anything. Another character who I originally thought was only deaf was then referenced as being both blind and deaf, and lastly the character’s blindness augmented by his friends sight was often confusing as to how he saw certain things, even after it was explained. I found myself thinking, how could he see that through his eyes? Are they both looking at that spot? Does he have sight now? A lot of that had to do with the No Power Zones that played a large part of the story. It wasn’t always clear when they were or weren’t inside of one, and a reminder from the character would have been helpful.
These are just small issues that broke my immersion, and I only draw them out to make the point that I enjoyed this book so much; these things annoyed me for getting in the way. This is also a cinemasins book, so I feel the need to be extra nitpicky. On to the good, which there was a lot of, but I’ll only name a few.
The main character was likeable, relatable, and I was constantly rooting for him to overcome. At no point did he seem weak or powerless, despite the hurdle he was forced to overcome. At the half way point of the book when they learned to use their powers together I was almost disappointed, as I wanted to see him kick ass as a totally blind superhero. Still, I was happy to follow him to the logical conclusion of the plot.
The author did a fantastic job of treating his characters like normal well rounded people, who happened to have some hindrance in their day to day life. The book did not beat you over the head with trying to sympathize with the characters for their disabilities, instead it just treated them like any other character might be; nice, funny, sarcastic, and even mean. The self-deprecating humor and dialogue were so realistic, that I went out and googled to see if I somehow missed the author himself being blind.
The story is well told, a blend of typical high school drama intermixed with super hero tropes, and with a running narrative of evil in the background that reminded me of the Harry Potter series. I was equally invested in both the struggle to fit into school as I was to see the characters take on the big bad. The twists were predictable, but still well done, and the character’s reaction to them made it worthwhile. I saw both of the big twists coming when the foreshadowing was introduced, but was still surprised by the way everyone handled it.
All in all, it was a good first novel, and with an obvious hook for a sequel I have no doubt I’ll be enjoying the author’s work again in the future. I will probably buy the audio book just so I can enjoy the author’s voice outside a cinemasins video, and so I can see the story as he meant it to be heard.

EWW The Ables in 300 words or less (no spoilers)

The first thing you need to know is that 'The Ables' is written for a younger audience than you may expect given the content of the authors CinemaSins videos. This is a YA novel, very reminiscent of Harry Potter.

The book centers around Phillip, a blind telekinetic and his group of friends, each of whom has a different superpower and disability that renders them an outcast even in the superhero community. But, over time, they learn to fight the forces of evil together.

Like I said, the book is fairly Harry Potter-lite. Plain every-boy character discovers he has hidden powers and goes on adventures with them and his friends. In the beginning, the prose was decent, but nothing truly memorable. However, after the first third, Scott kicks the writing up a notch, taking his characters through some unexpected trials and tribulations I had not expected and were quite fun to read.

That's not to say that they're weren't flaws. There was maybe one good female character worth mentioning, and her scenes are a blip in the radar of a 300 page book. The plot twists are all things anyone could see coming a mile away without even trying. And, of course, they're were a handful of notable plot holes. The only one I'll mention is that they do have healers, and they don't explain why they can't cure most of the disabilities.

All in all, this book was mostly just average. If you like superheroes, you'll probably like this.
